Abstract: A hoist rope for an elevator is formed from synthetic, non-metallic materials. The hoist rope includes a plurality of load-carrying strands with each strand encased within a coating layer. The coating layers provide protection against wear and provide sufficient lubricity to permit relative movement of the strands to equalize loading on the strands. The plurality of strands are surrounded by a jacket. The jacket provides sufficient traction with a traction sheave, transfers traction loads to the strands while permitting movement of the strands, and provides a flame retardant characteristic to the hoist rope. In one embodiment of an passenger conveyor system, the hoist rope is engaged with a traction sheave having a sheave liner. The material for the jacket and sheave liner are selected to optimize the coefficient of friction between the hoist rope and traction sheave.

Abstract: A tendon for use in posttensioning prestressed concrete comprising a multi-wire strand wherein individual peripheral abutting wires define an overall somewhat regular geometric cross-sectional strand configuration. The strand has both internal and external interstices wherein said external interstices are substantially fully filled with a dielectric plastic material such as a high molecular polyolefin material such as high density polyethylene. The plastic material forms a casement which completely surrounds the strand and forms a smooth outer surface having a circular cross-sectional configuration. A friction reducing grease-like material is coated on the outside of the casement and the entire structure thereafter enclosed in a plastic jacket. The above structure is formed by progressively extrusion coating the wire strand with the dielectric plastic, the thus coated strand with the grease-like material and the thus coated composite with plastic to form the jacket.

Abstract: A flexible cable comprises a plurality of substantially parallel, textile core threads and an external sheath, in which cable cohesion is provided by a binder which is applied in a discontinuous manner to the threads to bond the core threads to one another to form a core. The same or additional binder is used to bond the core to the sheath. An electrical conductor element may be provided centrally of the core and the sheath preferably is braided in position about the core. In addition to the beneficial properties associated with totally impregnated cables, the cables of this invention possess a very high flexibility. These cables or ropes can be used for all applications in which flexibility and strength are the principally desired qualities including, for example, motorway crash barriers, oceanography, ballooning, and fixing floating stations in the sea.

Abstract: PCT No. PCT/GB78/00019 Sec. 371 Date June 5, 1979 Sec. 102(e) date June 1, 1979 PCT Filed Oct. 3, 1978 PCT Pub. No. W079/00182 PCT Pub. Date Apr. 19, 1979The invention relates to wire ropes. There is disclosed a wire rope comprising a plurality of strands (4-12) twisted together with each strand (4-12) being individually covered by a respective sheath (16) of rubber or rubber substitute. Each strand (4-12) comprises a plurality of wires (14) twisted together with the direction of twist of at least the outer wires (14) in each strand (4-12) being opposite to the direction of twist of at least the outer wires (14) in the strands (4-12) adjacent to it, the rope having an outer covering sheath (18) of rubber or rubber substitute. In this way, the wires (14) of adjacent strands (4-12) do not cross each other, and stress on them is reduced.

Abstract: A safety belt system using a bendable cable section having a self-sustaining shape and a flexible strap section. The cable section is fixed on one side of the seat for positioning at the side of the occupant of the seat. The flexible strap section is fixed at the other side of the seat for extending across the seat and the occupant. Fastening means connected to the free ends of the cable and belt are provided for attaching the end of the belt to the cable at the one side of the occupant.
