The battery grid also includes a plurality of wires provided within the frame and defining a plurality of open areas and a current collection lug extending from the top element in a first direction. The battery grid further includes at least one feature provided in the battery grid that is configured to reduce the amount of growth of the battery grid in the first direction due to corrosion of the battery grid during the life of the battery grid.

    摘要: A battery system includes a battery with a pair of terminals extending from one side of the battery case, and a tray-like battery holder. The terminals have hollow sockets inserted therein which are engaged by posts extending from conductive plugs that extend through an end wall of the holder. A threaded connection is formed in the plug and opens to the outside of the holder. Alignment posts are formed in the holder to be disposed within cylindrical wells in the bottom of the battery case and ensure proper alignment of the battery in the holder. A hinged latch is formed in the holder and engages a projection on the battery case. When in place in the holder, the battery case rests on resilient pads located on a floor of the holder.

    摘要: A composite battery container for housing one or more cell elements comprising positive and negative plates alternately interleaved with separator material includes a battery housing defining one or more cell compartments. The cell compartments have resilient, flexible spacer and plate-rest ribs integrally formed in the sides and bottom of the cell compartments, but having different material properties than the battery housing. The battery housing is made of a rigid, low cost plastic material, while the ribs are a flexible thermoplastic elastomer. The flexible ribs elastically deform when a cell element is disposed within the cell compartment and return to a substantially non-deformed, originally molded position when the cell element is removed. The ribs are formed in any suitable orientation and at any suitable acute or obtuse angle from the cell compartment walls.

    摘要: Carbon/carbon composite materials for use in electrochemical cells are prepared by carbonizing a resin material used to bind a layer of carbon containing material to convert the resin to residual carbon. In one embodiment of the invention, the carbon containing material is a mixture of activated carbon fibers and activated carbon powder. In another embodiment, an activated carbon fabric is used instead of the discrete carbon fibers. Substantial improvements in mechanical properties, resistivity and surface area are achieved in the present invention. The composite materials may be used in the fabrication of electrodes and bipolar electrical devices such as capacitors.

    摘要: A double layer structure for use as a capacitor or battery electrode, for use in other electrochemical systems, includes in one embodiment a first layer containing conductive transition metal oxides and a second layer which includes conductive carbon embedded in a suitable binder. For capacitor and lead-acid battery applications the transition metal containing material is used as the negative terminal substrate. Another embodiment includes a carbon layer on an electrode surface, the electrode being made from the transition metal oxide in a binder. The last mentioned carbon layer is thin, inexpensive and more conductive than a laminate layer in which the carbon is imbedded in a self-supporting binder.

    摘要: A cast-on strap for use in connecting current collecting lugs in battery systems is disclosed. In the most preferred embodiment, the invention includes a caston strap formed of electrically conductive material, such as lead, having a first elongate portion in electrical contact with a line of spaced apart battery plate lugs. The connector strap includes a second portion lying in a plane which is perpendicular to that of the elongate portion so that the latter is laterally displaced. The preferred cast-on strap also includes an angularly extending portion between the elongate portion and the second portion. Increased current transfer efficiency is achieved using the strap of the present invention.

    摘要: The invention provides a vehicle battery system including a main and a reserve battery disposed within a battery housing (10) having conventional external dimensions and battery terminal locations. An illustrated embodiment includes a main battery, comprising a series of thin, flat cells (38) disposed along a first axis, and a reserve battery, comprising a series of cells (42) disposed along a second axis transverse to the first axis. An electrical circuit facilitates selective communication between the reserve battery and the vehicle starter in accordance with the position of a switch assembly (100). An electrically conductive fastener is disposed to simultaneously maintain electrical communication between a main battery termination and an external battery terminal and also between a reserve battery termination and the same external battery terminal.
