Abstract: A display may have an array of pixels that display images for a user. The backlight unit may have a light-guide layer. An array of light-emitting diodes may emit light into an edge of the light-guide layer. The light guide layer may overlap a backlight reflector. A quarter wave plate may be interposed between the light guide layer and the backlight reflector. A turning film may be interposed between a lower polarizer in the array of pixels and the light guide layer. The lower polarizer may be a reflective polarizer. Light exiting the upper surface of the turning film may have a dominant polarization. A half wave plate may be used to rotate the dominant polarization into alignment with a pass axis of the reflective polarizer.

Abstract: Electronic devices may include displays. A display may include display layers having an array of display pixels and a backlight unit that provides backlight illumination to the display pixels. The backlight unit may include a light guide plate that distributes light across the display layers and a stack of optical films that may be used to enhance backlight performance. The optical films may be interposed between the light guide plate and the display layers. The light guide plate may be provided with one or more rounded edges formed from curved surfaces and/or one or more beveled edges formed from chamfered surfaces. Providing the light guide plate with rounded or beveled edges may minimize abrasive contact between the light guide plate and the adjacent optical films. An injection molding tool may be used to mold a light guide plate with rounded or beveled edges.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display. The display may be overlapped by an antiglare film. The antiglare film may have a rough surface to diffuse incident light, thereby reducing glare. Additionally, the antiglare film may have a smooth portion that forms a transparent window and allows light to pass through undiffused. The electronic device may include a light-based component, such as a camera, that receives undiffused light through the transparent window. By overlapping the light-based component with the transparent window, the light-based component may receive the light in an unimpeded manner, thereby making more accurate measurements of the light. The display may have one or more display layers, such as opaque masking layers or polarizers, with openings that are aligned with the transparent window. The light-based component may receive the light through these openings so that the light is not absorbed or polarized before reaching the component.

Abstract: A display may have a layer of liquid crystal material interposed between a color filter layer and a thin-film transistor layer. A ring of adhesive sealant may surround the liquid crystal layer. Columns spacers may extend between the color filter and thin-film transistor layers through the liquid crystal layer to help ensure that the color filter and thin-film transistor layers are appropriately spaced apart from each other. A ring-shaped polymer spacer may surround the ring of adhesive sealant and may help protect display structures form exposure to etchant that is used to treat the edges of glass layers in the display. The spacer may be formed from the same layer of material that forms the column spacers. A black masking layer may be formed on the underside of the color filter layer using techniques that prevent the formation of protruding edge portions.

The display may also include a backlight unit that includes a light source, a light guide element, and a reflector film coupled to a backside of the light guide element. The display may also include a light retardation layer such as a quarter wave film. The quarter wave film may be arranged between the reflective polarizer and the reflector film of the backlight unit. Partially polarized light that is output from a front side of the light guide element may have a first component parallel to the in-plane optical axis and a second component perpendicular to the in-plane optical axis of the reflective polarizer. The backlight unit may include a printed circuit board, a plurality of light-emitting diodes mounted on the printed circuit board, at least one light spreading layer formed over the printed circuit board that spreads light received from the plurality of light-emitting diodes, a partially reflective layer formed over the at least one light spreading layer, a color conversion layer formed over the partially reflective layer, a collimating layer formed over the color conversion layer, a brightness enhancement film formed over the collimating layer, and a diffuser formed over the brightness enhancement film. The at least one light spreading layer may include two light spreading layers with elongated protrusions that are rotated relative to each other.

Abstract: A display device may include pixels and source lines that provide data line signals to the pixels. The display device may also include gate lines that provide gate signals to switches associated with the pixels. The display device may also include vertical gate lines disposed generally parallel to the source lines and coupled to the gate lines at cross point nodes. The display device may also include compensation lines, such that each compensation line is proximate to a respective vertical gate line. The compensation lines may transmit compensation signals having an opposite polarity as compared to respective gate signals to reduce or eliminate a kickback voltage on at least one of the plurality of pixels.
