The frame may be generally L-shaped or generally square-shaped. The frame may include a fillet that is generally planar, generally beveled or trapezoidal, or generally circular in shape. A heater may be additionally disposed on the frame. The etalon and frame subassembly may be bonded to a micro hot plate that is capable of heating the etalon to an operational temperature.

    摘要: According to one embodiment, the present application includes a tunable optical transmitter configured in a small package. The tunable optical transmitter includes a housing with a volume formed by exterior walls. An electrical input interface is positioned at the first end of the housing and configured to receive an information-containing electrical signal. An optical output interface is positioned at the second end of the housing and configured to transmit an optical communication beam. A tunable semiconductor laser is positioned in the interior space and operable to emit a laser beam having a selectable wavelength. A semiconductor-based modulator is positioned in the interior space along an optical path of the laser beam and operatively coupled to the optical output interface. The semiconductor-based modulator is configured to impart modulation to the laser beam corresponding to an information-containing electrical signal received through the electrical input interface.

    摘要: Thermally tunable optical dispersion compensation (ODC) devices are disclosed. In one aspect, an ODC device may include multiple Gires-Tournois (G-T) etalons. The etalons may be optically coupled together. The etalons may compensate for optical dispersion by collectively delaying light. At least one of the G-T etalons may have a temperature dependent partial reflector. The ODC device may also include at least one thermal device to change the temperature of the G-T etalon having the temperature dependent partial reflector. Methods of making and using the ODC devices are also disclosed, as well as various systems including the ODC devices.

The apparatus comprises a first tunable wavelength selection element having a first adjustable free spectral range, a second tunable wavelength selection element having a second adjustable free spectral range, with the first and second tunable wavelength selection elements configured to define a tunable joint transmission peak. The first and second tunable wavelength selection elements respectively define first and second pluralities of tunable transmission peaks, wherein respective ones of each of the first and second plurality of transmission peaks are aligned to obtain a joint transmission peak that may be adjusted by tuning the wavelength selection elements. The free spectral ranges of the wavelength selection elements are configured to enable a Vernier tuning effect.

    摘要: A servo technique for concurrently providing wavelength locking and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) suppression in an external cavity laser. Respective wavelength locking and SBS suppression signals are generated by a controller and combined into a composite drive signal. The composite drive signal is used to drive an optical path length adjustment element to modulate the optical path length of the laser cavity. The wavelength locking and SBS suppression portions of the drive signals produce concurrent modulations of the laser optical path length having different modulation frequencies and causing different frequency (wavelength) excursions. These modulations produce corresponding wavelength and intensity amplitude modulations in the laser's output. A feedback signal indicative of the intensity amplitude modulations is filtered to attenuate the portion of the signal due to the SBS suppression modulation, and is received as a tuning feedback signal by the controller. In response, the control provides a tuning adjustment signal to adjust the frequency of the laser.

    摘要: Method and apparatus for producing a laser output having stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) suppression characteristics. An excitation signal is provided to an optical path length adjustment element in an external cavity laser to modulate the optical path length of the cavity. This produces a laser output having a wavelength modulation frequency and line width that are a function of the frequency and amplitude of the excitation signal. Under appropriate modulation frequency and line width combinations, the laser output comprises an optical signal with SBS suppression characteristics, thus enabling a higher power signal to be launched into a fiber link since the SBS suppression characteristics raise the SBS threshold of the link. The optical path length modulation also produces an intensity (amplitude) modulation in the laser output. A detector is employed to produce a feedback signal indicative of the intensity modulation that is used for tuning the laser in accordance with a wavelength locking servo loop.
