    Abstract: A method and apparatus for delivery of energy by an electro-surgical instrument to a surgical site is disclosed. The apparatus delivers power to electrodes of an electro-surgical instrument during an operation performed at a surgical site. The apparatus includes a processor and a plurality of power delivery channels. The processor signals the onset of an impedance interval and a heating interval. The processor determines a target value of a control parameter to be delivered to a corresponding one of the electrodes. The plurality of power delivery channels are each coupled to the processor and to a corresponding electrode. Each of the power delivery channels responsive to signaling from the processor transitions between the impedance interval and the heating interval. Each of the power delivery channels measures, during the impedance interval, an impedance associated with a delivery of energy to the surgical site by a corresponding electrode. Each of the power delivery channels, during the heating interval, minimizes a difference between a measured value of a control parameter and the target value of the control parameter determined by the processor, to deliver the energy to the surgical site. In an alternate embodiment of the invention a method for controlling power delivery in an electro-surgical instrument is disclosed.     Abstract: A portable defibrillator device has a housing including a disposable power pack and a main electronic unit. Treatment, ground pad and ECG electrodes are also included. One or more non-rechargeable batteries are positioned in the power pack, with each battery including battery contacts. An ECG detection circuit provides a control signal representative of heart activity. A defibrillation circuit is responsive to the control signal and is connected to the treatment electrode to deliver a discharge to the patient. In another embodiment, the portable defibrillator's housing includes a removable power pack and a main electronic unit. Disposed within the power pack are one or more batteries. A treatment electrode is capable of delivering a defibrillation shock and also measure ECG activity of a patient. A ground pad electrode is also included. An ECG detection circuit provides the control circuit, and a defibrillation circuit receives the control signal and delivers a treatment shock when appropriate. The defibrillation circuit is substantially positioned in the main electronic unit.

    Abstract: A working end of a surgical instrument that carries first and second jaws for delivering energy to tissue. In a preferred embodiment, at least one jaw of the working end defines a tissue-engagement plane that contacts the targeted tissue. The cross-section of the engagement plane reveals that it defines a surface conductive portion that overlies a variably resistive matrix of a temperature-sensitive resistive material or a pressure-sensitive resistive material. An interior of the jaw carries a conductive material or electrode that is coupled to an Rf source and controller. In an exemplary embodiment, the variably resistive matrix can comprise a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) material, such as a ceramic, that is engineered to exhibit a dramatically increasing resistance (i.e., several orders of magnitude) above a specific temperature of the material.
