A polymeric liquid crystal composition includes a polymer mesomorphic compound having an asymmetric carbon atom and a low-molecular weight mesomorphic compound. The composition can be easily formed into a film of a large area, exhibits a response speed which is not substantially different from that of the low-molecular weight mesomorphic compound alone and stably retains alignment resistant to pressure or heat impact. Such a good alignment is especially obtained when the polymeric liquid crystal composition is incorporated in a liquid crystal device by being disposed between a pair of substrates preferably having an alignment face provided with an orientation characteristic for aligning the molecular axis of the liquid crystal composition in one direction. It is suitable that the polymer mesomorphic compound is optically active and has a helical rotation direction opposite to that of the low-molecular weight mesomorphic compound.

A crosslinked polymer liquid crystal is stretched to provide a polymer liquid crystal layer with a higher degree of uniform alignment than a non-crosslinked polymer liquid crystal. Such a stretched layer of crosslinked polymer liquid crystal is disposed between a pair of substrates to form a liquid crystal device showing a better contrast as a recording medium or display device. The improvement in alignment obtained by stretching of a crosslinked polymer liquid crystal is also effective in increasing the responsive characteristics in response to an electric field or magnetic field and also the pyro-electric effect of the resultant polymer liquid crystal layer where the polymer liquid crystal is a ferro-electric one.

Preferably, the ferroelectric is formed in an optical modulation layer set to have an optical thickness capable of providing a multiple reflection state. The multiple reflection state of the optical modulation layer is locally changed at or above the glass transition point by irradiating the optical modulation layer under an electric field with a laser beam to write in the optical modulation layer.

An apparatus for forming an image of the present invention comprises an image medium which is made of a heat-sensitive material in and from whcih an image can be thermally recordded and erased. The image medium has at least two display regions having different colors in the same face and having different thermal transition temperatures between a transparent state and a scattering state. A thermal signal applying member is employed for forming an image by thermally scanning said image medium which is characterized by applying to said medium a temperature controlled so that at least two differnt colors are displayed in a one-signal period of thermal scanning. The present invention also provides a method of forming an image using the image forming apparatus.

Each display layer comprises a polymer liquid crystal having a mesomorphic temperature range between its glass transition temperature and the upper limit temperature of a liquid crystal phase used for display. The mesomorphic temperature ranges of the plurality of display layers do not overlap each other. The optical densities of the display layers are controlled independently from the other by controlling the heating temperatures and cooling rates of the display layers, and the gradation of each color can be also controlled, so that a full-color display can be realized.

A color image forming method provides clear color images with good color balance by thermally controlling a thermosensitive medium, such as polymer liquid crystal. The medium is capable of reversibly assuming optical states of being transparent and of scattering light, and allows picture-element display areas in at least two colors to be composed on a surface thereof. Picture elements within color areas are selected if they correspond to the color whose spectral transmission center is, among those of the colors to be displayed, closest to the longest wavelength involved. Heat is applied such that the maximum haze degree of the selected picture elements is greater than that of picture elements corresponding to any of the other colors.
