Coengagement of the brakes B1 and B2 in L-range due to sticking of the spool 234 at the descended position is avoided by intercepting the supply of fluid pressure to the brake B1 at the ports 226 and 228 which are separated by the spool 212 descended in L-range.

A vehicle has at least two wheels, a transmission mechanism, and a clutch which can be selectively engaged to at least partially rotationally couple together these two wheels. This anti torque shock control device includes a means for detecting whether or not shift range of the transmission mechanism is a vehicle non driving range or a vehicle driving range, and a means for controlling the clutch to be at least partially engaged, when shift range of the transmission mechanism alters from a vehicle non driving range to a vehicle driving range. A full time four wheel drive transmisson system for a vehicle includes a gear transmission mechanism, driven by an engine, which is automatically controlled to operate in any of several forward ranges of speed stages including a drive range and a set containing one or more intermediate hold ranges in which the engagement of at least one of the upper speed stages included in the drive range is prohibited. The transmission system also includes a central differential device, driven from the gear transmission mechanism, which provides rotational power to the combination of the front wheels of the automotive vehicle and to the combination of the rear wheels of the automotive vehicle while providing differential action between these combinations. The central differential device has a clutch which when engaged at least partly inhibits its differential action. During vehicle operation, the clutch of the central differential device is engaged when the gear transmission mechanism is being controlled to operate in one of the set of intermediate hold speed ranges. Thereby, good vehicle high power characteristics and good engine braking characteristics are obtained. The engagement of the central differential device clutch further may be conditional on the engine throttle being substantially fully closed.

In a four wheel drive power transmission system for a vehicle, a power distribution device receives power from an engine and provides rotational power to the combination of the front wheels and also to the combination of the rear wheels, and is controllable either to provide differential action between the front wheels combination and the rear wheels combination, or for this differential action to be at least partially inhibited. This slippage control device includes: a subsystem which detects occurrence of certain speed shift circumstances of the transmission mechanism; and a subsystem which controls the power distribution device to at least partly inhibit its differential function, if the speed shift circumstances detection subsystem determines that the transmission mechanism is in fact undergoing the speed shift circumstances. The method of operation of this device is also described. The control of the power distribution device may be according to elapsed time from the time point of outputting of a speed shift command signal to the transmission mechanism, and may be based upon type of speed shift, or based upon load on the vehicle engine, or based upon the manually set operating range for the transmission mechanism, if it is an automatic transmission mechanism. Typically, the speed shift circumstances are speed down shift circumstances, quite usually circumstances of speed down shift to the first speed stage of the transmission mechanism, such as may accompanying a manual change of operational range of the transmission mechanism such as from "D" range to "L" range. The inhibition of differential action may be only performed if vehicle road speed is higher than a determinate value, or vehicle turning angle is lower than a determinate value, or both. The invention is particularly useful when the power distribution device for four wheel drive is of a type which, when thus being controlled to provide differential action, distributes drive torque substantially unequally between the front wheels combination and the rear wheels combination.
