摘要: A computing arrangement for determining a location of a wireless communications device includes a memory arrangement, a communication arrangement and a processor. The memory arrangement stores a location of each of at least three access points. The communication arrangement receives first data which includes at least one of first signal strength data and second signal strength data. The first signal strength data is indicative of a strength of a first signal transmitted by the device and received by the at least three access points. The second signal strength data is indicative of a strength of a second signal transmitted by the at least three access points and received by the device. The processor determines a location area of the device as a function of the first data and the location of each of the at least three access points, the location area being within a predetermined reception range of the at least three access points. The processor determines the location of the device within the location area as a function of second data. The second data is indicative of a travel time of a third signal from the device to each of the at least three access points.

摘要: A method and apparatus are provided for controlling the operation of a Laser Projection Display (LPD). Generally, the LPD is comprised of a laser, an optical system and a controller. The laser is adapted to emit a beam of laser light. The optical system is adapted to scan the beam of laser light on a display surface in a two-dimensional raster pattern. The controller is adapted to control the rate at which the laser beam is scanned to produce regions of varying resolution on the display surface. The controller is also adapted to present laser light onto the display surface within only selected portions of the two-dimensional raster scan pattern so that spaced apart image regions may be created.

摘要: A nozzle apparatus for use with an abrasive fluid jet cutting system, and its method of construction and operation, are disclosed that reduce the wear and erosion problems typically experienced in the cutting jet's nozzle. This improved nozzle apparatus comprises (a) a nozzle having an entry port for receiving a slurry consisting of a carrier fluid and abrasive particles, an inner wall for directing the flow of the slurry, and an outlet port through which the slurry exits the nozzle, (b) wherein at least a portion of the nozzle wall is porous, and (c) a lubricating fluid chamber that surrounds the porous portion of the outer wall of the nozzle, the chamber having a port where a lubricating fluid enters the chamber, with the chamber port connecting to an input pipe which connects to a filter for filtering contaminants that might clog the pores of the porous portion of the nozzle. The nozzle operates by having the lubricating fluid pass from the lubricating reservoir and through the porous wall to lubricate at least a portion of the surface of the nozzle inner wall so as to resist erosion of the wall, as well as result in an abrasive slurry jet with improved coherence and cutting efficiency.

摘要: A statistical basis for use in a self-scanning checkout system determines how many items to check in a shopper's shopping cart for incorrect or missing scans as well as which particular or types of items to check to determine if they were properly scanned, if the shopper is determined to be audited. The present invention does not audit every customer, but rather determines whether a given shopper or customer is to be audited on a given shopping trip based upon obtaining a minimum checkout loss for such customer. The methodology determines how many items to check for a given shopper as well as which particular items to check for that shopper. The following factors attempt to model the real world of shopping and may be considered, alone or in varying combinations, in determining the number of items to check for a particular shopping transaction: shopper frequency; queue length; prior audit history; store location; time of day, day of week, date of year; number of times items are returned to shelf during shopping; dwell time between scans; customer loyalty; store shopping activity and other factors. Using statistical decision theory for auditing policies a minimum loss per shopper transaction improves the security and reduces the labor of self-check out without being too intrusive to customers.

摘要: A scanning device for reading indicia of differing light reflectivity, including bar code or matrix array symbols, has a single light emitter, such as a laser or light emitting diode, for generating a scanning light beam to visually illuminate sequential portions of the indicia. A sensor, such as a charge coupled or other solid state imaging device, simultaneously detects light reflected from portions of the indicia and generates an electrical signal representative of the spacial intensity variations the portions of the indicia. The scanning device may also include an ambient light sensor, and a second light emitter for use only in aiming or orienting the scanning device. A photodetector may also be provided to separately detect one symbol virtually simultaneous with the detection of another symbol by the sensor or to provide dual modalities. A method for reading indicia is also provided.

摘要: A bar code scanner and method for scanning a bar code symbol that splits a light beam using a liquid crystal device and directs the split light beams toward a bar code symbol using a moveable mirror. The light reflected by the symbol from each of the split light beams is summed and converted to an electrical signal indicative of the bar code symbol. The electrical signal is processed to decode the bar code symbol, but, if decoding is unsuccessful, the liquid crystal device is changed to affect the number of split light beams incident on the bar code symbol.
