Abstract: A compression ignition gasoline engine includes a fuel injection valve for injecting fuel containing gasoline as a main component into a cylinder; an EGR device operative to perform high-temperature EGR of introducing burnt gas generated in the cylinder into the cylinder at a high temperature; an octane number determination unit for determining whether fuel injected from the fuel injection valve has a prescribed octane number; and a combustion control unit for controlling the fuel injection valve and the EGR device in such a way that HCCI combustion occurs within the cylinder. The combustion control unit controls the EGR device, in at least a partial load operating range in which HCCI combustion is performed, in such a way that the EGR rate increases, as compared with a case where fuel is determined to have a prescribed octane number, when fuel is determined not to have a prescribed octane number.

Abstract: A combustion chamber structure for an engine is provided. The combustion chamber structure includes a piston formed with a downward dented cavity at a central part of an upper surface thereof, and a fuel injector provided above the piston and on an extended line of a central axis of the piston, the fuel injector changing an injection timing of fuel on a compression stroke according to an operating state of the engine. A fuel injection angle of the fuel injector is designed to satisfy conditions in which the fuel is injected into the cavity and in which a fuel spray collision distance defined from a fuel injection position of the fuel injector to a collision position of the fuel with the cavity is longer than a breakup length defined from the fuel injection position of the fuel injector to a position where an initial breakup of the fuel occurs.

Abstract: A spark-ignition direct injection engine is provided. The engine includes an engine body, a fuel injection valve, a fuel pressure setting mechanism, an ignition plug, and a controller. Within a low engine speed operating range of a predetermined high engine load range, the fuel pressure setting mechanism sets a fuel pressure to 30 MPa or above, the fuel injection valve injects fuel between late stage of compression stroke and early stage of expansion stroke, and the ignition plug performs spark-ignition after the fuel injection completes. Within a high engine speed operating range of the high engine load range, the fuel injection valve injects fuel between intake stroke to mid-stage of compression stroke, and the ignition plug performs the spark-ignition. The ignition timing is changed according to an octane number, the changing width of the ignition timing is shorter within the low engine speed range than the high engine speed range.

Abstract: A control device for a compression self-ignition engine includes a fuel injection system and an injection controller. While the engine is operated by CI combustion under a given first condition, a first injection is carried out in which fuel is injected at a first timing in a compression stroke and at which the fuel goes toward a part radially outward of a cavity formed in a crown surface of a piston, and a second injection is suspended. While the engine is operated by the CI combustion under a second condition in which a temperature inside a combustion chamber at a close timing of an intake valve becomes lower than the first condition, at least the second injection is carried out in which the fuel is injected at a second timing later than the first timing in the compression stroke and at which the fuel goes toward the cavity.

Injection openings are arranged in a circumferential direction surrounding a longitudinal axis of the valve. The combustion chamber at a compression top dead center is divided into a plurality of fuel injection regions, located in respective injection directions of the injection openings, by vertical surfaces extending radially from the longitudinal axis through a middle between adjacent injection openings. When a volume of the fuel injection region located in the injection direction of the injection opening is large, an opening area of the injection opening is large.

Abstract: A control device of a compression-ignition engine is provided. The device includes an engine having a cylinder, a fuel injection valve for injecting a fuel, an exhaust valve mechanism for switching an operation mode of an exhaust valve between a normal mode and an open-twice mode, a throttle valve disposed on an intake passage, and a controller for operating the engine by compression-ignition combustion of mixture gas inside the cylinder at least within a low engine load range. The controller suspends the fuel injection by the fuel injection valve when a predetermined fuel cut condition is met while the engine decelerates, and the controller fully closes the throttle valve and controls the exhaust valve mechanism to operate in the open-twice mode during the fuel cut. When a predetermined fuel resuming condition is met, the controller restarts the fuel injection, opens the throttle valve, and causes the compression-ignition combustion.
