At a second point of the format finger a transducer of the temperature of the format finger caused by the friction heat at a predetermined conveying speed of the rod is disposed in a blind bore; said temperature represents a measure for the hardness of the smokable article.

The invention relates to a method for determining a parameter for fibres, particularly for crimped, irregularly structured fibres, such as textile fibres and tobacco fibres. A given quantity of fibres is separated on a substrate. Two congruent images of the separated fibres is produced with a camera. By means of a grid, the number of grid elements covered by the fibres is determined from the superimposed congruent images. The images are then mutually displaced by one and/or more grid steps (.DELTA.x.sub.o,.DELTA.y.sub.o) in (-x) and (+y) and (x/.+-.y) (diagonally). (For symmetry reasons the (-x) and (-y) displacements give the same results as the (+x), (+y) displacements and the (-x/.+-.y) displacements give the same results as the (+x/.+-.y) displacements. The number of grid elements with fibres of the two images still covering one another following the displacement is determined and added to the number of grid elements with fibres of the non-displaced images. By dividing the result by the number of grid elements with fibres of the non-displaced images, the geometrical parameter is obtained. Division is a standardization procedure. Thus, the parameter is independent of the fibre quantity applied.

The mass transducer includes a vertically movably resiliently mounted pushrod which is held in its desired position by an electromagnetic return system. The magnitude of the current supplied to an electromagnetic return system represents a measure of the mass of the collected tobacco particles.

The coaxial filter cigarette according to the invention contains of a coaxial rod portion and a coaxial filter element. The rod portion contains an inner core of a material glowing or smouldering substantially residue-free, in particular tobacco material, which is surrounded by a wrapper which in turn is surrounded by an outer jacket of a tobacco and/or non-tobacco material. A wrapper of an air-permeable material surrounds the outer jacket. The coaxial filter element has a filter core with an air-impermeable wrapper. A filter jacket having a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the outer jacket coaxially surrounds the filter core and its wrapper. An air-impermeable wrapper serving also to connect the rod portion and filter element surrounds the filter jacket. A ventilation zone is worked into the air-impermeable wrapper for the filter jacket. In the transition region between the rod portion and the filter element a smoke mixing zone is formed for defined variation of the smoke mixture leaving the rod portion before it flows into the filter element.

The vibrator conveyor includes vertical partitions extending in the direction of tobacco rib transport. The intervals between the partitions are less than the average tobacco rib length. A device regulates the level of the tobacco rib flow transported between the partitions. Tobacco ribs can be precisely aligned in the axial direction prior to cutting, and can be transferred to the cutting tool without any loss of orientation.
