The invention belongs to the engineering domain of heating systems, in particular heating systems for chipped to free-flowing fuels in solid form and relates to an operating method for a solid fuel burner. The aim of the invention is to design an operating method for a solid fuel burner, which achieves an efficient operating mode for said burner with the main focus on minimizing the production of aggressive substances such as acids. To achieve this, according to the invention, the burner operation has a double or triple combustion phase profile and the burner operates with two different groups of combustion material.

A reactor for incinerating and melting materials such as waste and/or toxic materials has a containment housing inside of which an upright, open-ended drum is rotatably mounted. The drum is lined with refractory, forms a central discharge opening for the removal of incinerated and melted materials, and has an upright, outer wall. Incineration heat is supplied by a plasma torch which is mounted to the containment housing and extends into the drum. A steel throat ring concentric with the discharge opening is connected with the exterior of the drum; e.g. an outer drum wall, by grounding arms which extend non-radially; e.g. tangentially from a periphery of the throat ring to the inside surface of the drum wall, so that electric discharge from the torch to the upwardly oriented surfaces of the throat ring and the grounding arms is possible. The throat ring and the grounding arms are otherwise embedded in insulating refractory material carried by a rotating base plate of the drum which has a radially open, horizontally disposed slit that extends radially from a periphery of the base plate to the vicinity of the discharge opening. Several cooling water nozzles are mounted to the containment housing opposite the slit for directing cooling water jets radially into the slit. The rotation of the drum generates centrifugal forces which aid in the removal of the cooling water from the slit.

This invention relates to methods of and apparatus for treating waste products. The apparatus comprises a furnace 1 and a recuperator 2, the furnace comprising at least one rotary section 4 for combustion and/or pyrolysis of the waste products and a stationary section 3 for guiding the smokes generated in the furnace between said rotary section 4 and the recuperator 2. This latter comprises an arrangement 11 -12 for causing the smokes to flow in a state of heat exchange with a fluid 14 for exploitation of the heat thus recovered. A heat-carrier fluid circuit is also incorporated between the walls delimiting the said stationary section 3 and/or the said rotary section 4 of the furnace and the recuperator 2, in such manner that the heat-carrier fluid may transfer the heat it had absorbed during its passage within the furnace walls to the exploitation fluid in the recuperator.

In accordance with the invention, a branch pipe is located at the extreme end of a first of the chambers for admitting fluid to the first chamber, such that the fluid flows through a first set of tubes to a second chamber and then through a second set of tubes and is returned to another chamber and exits through a second branch pipe disposed at an extreme end of the chamber. The structure made in accordance with the present invention exhibits a relative flow pattern between the chambers that is a counterflow, thereby improving the performance of the combustor. preferably, the tubes are grouped in plurality of pairs of tubes, and the chambers include relatively smaller chambers and relatively larger chambers. In one preferred embodiment, the combustor has an input end and a discharge end, and the relatively larger chambers are disposed at the input end and the relatively smaller chambers are disposed at the discharge end. The kiln includes a plurality of parallel heat transfer tubes arranged in spaced parallel circular array. The end portions of the tubes terminate in a ring header or plenum that surrounds the shroud ring, so as to define an annular gap between the ring header and shroud ring. A plurality of blocking members are connected to the kiln and interposed between the plenum and the shroud. The shroud and the blocking members cooperate to seal the gap. Moreover, a portion of each blocking member extends over a predetermined portion of a respective one of the tubes and over a predetermined portion of the plenum to protect the plenum and the pipes from impact damage by the municipal waste.

A rotary connector for coupling at least one stationary pipe to a rotating pipe includes a casing which is connected to a stationary inlet pipe and a stationary outlet pipe and which houses a rotary stem. The rotary stem includes an inner stem disposed within an outer stem for providing a first and second fluid flow path through the rotary stem. A spool is positioned between the rotary stem and the rotating pipe, which leads to a rotating piece of equipment, such as a combustor. The spool has an inner sleeve disposed within an outer sleeve for providing first and second fluid flow paths through the spool. The rotary connector also includes a seal for sealing an inboard end of the casing and a blind flange for sealing an outboard end of the casing. The fluid flows from the inlet pipe, through apertures in the outer stem, through an annulus between the inner and outer stems, through an annulus between the inner and outer sleeves of the spool, and into the coaxial pipe. After the fluid exits the rotary equipment, such as the combustor, the fluid flows back through the coaxial pipe, through the inner sleeve of the spool, through the inner stem of the rotary stem, through apertures in the outer stem and into the outlet pipe attached to the casing.
