摘要:
A differential including a driven carrier which rotatably receives a pair of spaced bevel gears secured to axially aligned shafts concentric with the axis of rotation of the carrier. A pair of diametrically opposed slots are formed in the inner surface of the carrier and extend parallel to the carrier axis. A two-piece floating pinion pin having pinions journaled thereon includes generally rectangular feet on opposite ends thereof slidably received in the slots and defining flats that are longer than the pin diameter and which slidably engage the sides of the slots thereby preventing rotation of the pin relative to the carrier while allowing the axis of each pinion to shift longitudinally of the slot to maintain the axis of each pinion centered between the engaged portions of the bevel gears. Full bearing engagement of the flats with the sides of the slots is assured during normal operation by a spring which urges the feet of the pinion pin fully into their associated slots thereby compensating for tolerance build up axially of the pinion pin, and by the longer length of the flats which compensates for tolerance buildups transversely of the pinion pin.

An axle lubrication system is provided utilizing an especially configured differential carrier housing adapted to be mounted to an axle housing with the axle housing oriented either upside-down or right-side-up. In either orientation, the lubrication system of the present invention provides a positive lubrication flow to the differential in either a forward or reverse direction of operation. The differential bearing support defines first and second lubricant passages and a differential carrier housing defines first and second lubricant troughs, communicating, respectively, with the first and second lubricant passages. Each of the lubricant troughs has an opening adjacent the pinion gear such that the first lubricant trough receives splash from the pinion gear, for either direction of rotation of the pinion gear, with the axle mechanism in the right-side-up position and the second lubricant trough receives the splash from the pinion gear, in either direction of rotation, with the axle mechanism in the upside-down position. Thus, the use of pick up director members is eliminated and positive lubricant flow, independent of lubricant temperature, is provided in all four modes of operation.

A differential gearing mechanism including pinion gears supported in a housing by a pinion support member. The support member comprises a central member having an axial opening and a pair of bores disposed on axes angularly related to the axial opening. The central opening receives a pin which also extends through coaxial openings in the housing and supports a pair of pinion gears. The support member further includes a pair of support elements respectively extending through further housing openings and each element has one end secured in a bore and the opposite end supported in an associated housing opening. The differential gear mechanism is assembled by locating the pinions in the housing and aligning support pinion openings with respective housing openings, inserting the pin through coaxial housing openings and the central opening, and inserting the respective support elements through the remaining housing openings and securing the one end of the elements in the support member bore. In a modified form, the central member includes a plurality of bores angularly related to each other and each receiving a pinion support element.

Within a vehicle transmission casing (11), a plurality of speed-reducing and -changing gear trains are disposed between a drive shaft (12), which extends laterally of the transmission casing, and a differential gearing (13) for driving left and right wheel axles (15) differentially. The gear trains are composed of plural gears (17, 18; 117, 118, 119), which are fixedly mounted on the drive shaft, and another plural gears (20, 21; 120, 121, 122) which are rotatably mounted on a differential casing (14) of the gearing and mesh respectively with the gears on the drive shaft. A clutch member (23; 123) is disposed on the differential casing for coupling the gears thereon one at a time to this casing. The gears on the differential casing are preferably mounted on this casing through sleeve members (24a, 25b) which may be integral with a collar member (24) for supporting the clutch member slidably but non-rotatably relative to the differential casing. A compactness of the transmission assembly is attained while securing large speed-reducing ratios at the gear trains.

First and second worm wheels respectively fixed to the first and second cases, first and second worms respectively meshing with the first and second worm wheels and at least one electric motor for rotating the first and second worms are provided. The motor is controlled by a control device so as to maintain the difference between the number of revolutions of the second and third shafts within a predetermined range.

In order to provide pulsating thrust on vehicle half-shafts during excess differential actions such as occur on spin-outs or skids on ice, the side gear teeth are modified to exhibit two different e.g. involutes on the single tooth engagement zone (P.sub.1 -P.sub.2). Their junction line is a convex discontinuity (Q), the modified teeth becoming thicker. The pinions are typically unmodified. The pulsating increases friction, which reduces spin-out tendencies. The friction can be increased more by inserting friction rings between the side gears and their bearings.

A transmission unit comprises a differential gear unit having a pair of side-journals rotatably supported by a pair of axially spaced side-bearings carried on a pair of carrier portions of a casing for the transmission unit, a pair of wheel axles extending outwardly through the respective side-journals from the differential gear unit in an opposite direction and surrounded by a pair of annular seal members carried on the respective carrier portions, a pair of annular shim plates interposed between each of the carrier portions and each of the side-bearings, and a pair of oil passages for leading lubricating oil into a pair of annular side-spaces formed around each of the wheel axles between the respective side-bearings and the respective seal members. Each of the annular shim plates is formed at the inner peripheral portion thereof with a number of circumferentially spaced radial projections and recesses which are arranged to radially lead the lubricating oil onto each of the wheel axles for lubrication of the side-journals.
