This invention relates to rigid porous carbon structures and to methods of making same. The rigid porous structures have a high surface area which are substantially free of micropores. Methods for improving the rigidity of the carbon structures include causing the nanofibers to form bonds or become glued with other nanofibers at the fiber intersections. The bonding can be induced by chemical modification of the surface of the nanofibers to promote bonding, by adding “gluing” agents and/or by pyrolyzing the nanofibers to cause fusion or bonding at the interconnect points.

Metal loaded carbon filaments and a process for making the same are provided. This process includes forming metal on carbon filaments produced from at least one carbon-containing compound, e.g., an alkane or an alkene. The metal may be formed on surfaces of previously formed carbon filaments by, for example, electroplating, impregnation, or chemical vapor deposition. Alternatively, the carbon filaments and the metal may be formed concurrently, resulting in the metal being incorporated in the carbon filaments. An article of manufacture is also provided that includes a carbon filament having metal disposed thereon. The article of manufacture may be, for example, a high surface area catalyst, an electronic element, and a composite material having enhanced electrical properties.

A high surface area carbon nanofiber is provided. The carbon nanofiber has an outer surface on which a porous high surface area layer is formed. A method of making the high surface area carbon nanofiber includes pyrolizing a polymeric coating substance provided on the outer surface of the carbon nanofiber at a temperature below the temperature at which the polymeric coating substance melts. The polymeric coating substance used as the high surface area around the carbon nanofiber may include phenolics-formaldehyde, polyacrylonitrile, styrene, divinyl benzene, cellulosic polymers and cyclotrimerized diethynyl benzene. The high surface area polymer which covers the carbon nanofiber may be functionalized with one or more functional groups.

A novel flexible biregional carbonaceous fiber is disclosed comprising an inner core region of a thermoplastic polymeric material and an outer region of a carbonaceous sheath. The flexible biregional carbonaceous fibers are particularly characterized by having a ratio of the radius of the core region with respect to the total radius of the fiber (r:R) of from about 1:4 to about 1:1.05, a density of from about 1.45 to about 1.87 g/cm.sup.3, and a bending strain value of from greater than 0.01 to less than 50%. In a further embodiment of the invention, a biregional precursor fiber is disclosed having an inner core region of a thermoplastic polymeric material and an outer sheath region of a oxidation stabilized, thermoset polymeric material. The oxidation stabilized precursor fiber is characterized by having a density of from about 1.20 to about 1.32 g/cm.sup.3 The invention further resides in methods of making the biregional fibers. Preferred end uses for the biregional fibers are disclosed including thermal insulation; flame resistant and fire blocking insulation; blends of the biregional carbonaceous fibers with other natural or polymeric fibers; coated fibers, composites composed of a polymeric matrix reinforced with the biregional carbonaceous fibers of the invention, electron conductive fibers for battery electrodes, and the like.

There are here disclosed carbon fibers for reinforcement of cement which are obtained by applying, onto the surfaces of carbon fibers, esters of oleic acid and aliphatic monovalent alcohols, esters of oleyl alcohol and monovalent fatty acids, polyoxyalkylene bisphenol ethers or polyether esters as sizing agents, and a cement composite material having a bending strength of 300 kgf/cm.sup.2 or more which contains cut carbon fibers having a fiber length of 10 to 50 mm at a mixing volume ratio of the cut carbon fibers to the cement matrix in the range of 1 to 5%. According to the present invention, there are provided the carbon fibers for reinforcement of cement which have excellent adhesive properties to the cement, good process passage properties through a direct spray gun and good bundling properties and which are suitable for a direct spray method, and the cement composite material using the carbon fibers and having high bending strength.

The present invention provides a short carbon fiber reinforced hydraulic composite material making the best use of physical properties of short carbon fibers incorporated as reinforcing material. Microparticles are deposited on the short carbon fibers in an amount of 0.5 to 3 wt. %. These microparticles also have a particle diameter of 5 microns or less.
