Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for supporting narrowband device-to-device wireless communication, including possible techniques for performing discovery in an off grid radio system. A wireless device may obtain synchronization with a peer-to-peer communication group. The wireless device may determine the location of the wireless device within the peer-to-peer communication group based at least in part on signal strength of a synchronization signal used to obtain the synchronization. The wireless device may perform peer-to-peer discovery in the peer-to-peer communication group, such that time and frequency resources used by the wireless device to perform the peer-to-peer discovery are determined based at least in part on the location of the first wireless device within the peer-to-peer communication group.

Abstract: Mechanisms are disclosed for improved transmission of uplink control information by a user equipment (UE) that is link budget limited. In one embodiment, the UE transmits a message to the base station indicating that the UE is link budget limited. In response to the message, the base station sends an uplink grant to the UE, enabling the UE to transmit uplink control information on the physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) instead of on the Physical Uplink Control Channel (PUCCH). In another embodiment, the base station sends an uplink grant to a link-budget-limited UE each time downlink traffic is transmitted to the UE, enabling the UE to send ACK/NACK feedback on the PUSCH instead of the PUCCH. In another embodiment, the UE transmits a scheduling request (SR) to the base station as part of a random access procedure, enabling the SR to be transmitted on the PUSCH instead of the PUCCH.

Abstract: A method for initiating a codec rate change during a VoIP call by a wireless communication device is disclosed. The method can include the wireless communication device establishing a first codec rate for use in the VoIP call during a call establishment phase; using the first codec rate to encode voice data for transmission during a first portion of the VoIP call; determining a channel quality while using the first codec rate; determining that the channel quality satisfies a threshold for requesting a codec rate change; requesting a codec rate change from the first codec rate to a second codec rate in response to the channel quality satisfying the threshold; and using the second codec rate to encode voice data for transmission during a second portion of the VoIP call.

Abstract: A method for dynamically selecting an A-MPR value to apply for an uplink transmission is provided. The method can include a wireless communication device receiving an indication from a network that A-MPR should be applied for uplink transmissions within a frequency band used for communication between the wireless communication device and the network. The method can further include the wireless communication device receiving an RB allocation for a subset of RB's within the frequency band from the network. The method can additionally include the wireless communication device determining an allocation ratio and a distribution characteristic of the allocated subset of RB's within the frequency band. The method can also include the wireless communication device selecting an A-MPR value to apply based at least in part on the allocation ratio and the distribution characteristic. The method can further include the wireless communication device applying the selected A-MPR.

Abstract: A user equipment (UE) operating in a communication system comprising a base station and one or more UEs. The UE may be configured to operate on or “camp” on two different networks with one radio. In this exemplary system, the radio may be normally connected to the first network (NW1) and may from time to time be “tuned away” from NW1 to a second network (NW2). The UE may inform NW1 that it has tuned away to another network, e.g., using start and end indicators. This information may prevent NW1 from wasting downlink capacity by unnecessarily allocating downlink resources to the UE during the tune-away. Alternatively, or in addition, this information may prevent NW1 from penalizing the UE, e.g., by reducing its future downlink allocations, since the UE does not respond to NW1 commands during the tune-away.

Abstract: A user equipment (UE) device may communicate according to a new device category satisfying specified QoS (quality of service) requirements while also satisfying specified link budget requirements, and additional optimization requirements. The new device category may identify the UE device as a wearable device. According to some embodiments, LTE category M may be extended to support non-MTC operations performed by wearable devices. For example, the new device category may support UE mobility and may disallow access barring. Additional extensions may be implemented in response to an indication by the UE that the UE is implementing a specific application, such as VoLTE or a near real-time application, such as audio streaming. In some scenarios, the indication may include the UE indicating a specific QCI value. In some scenarios, the indication may include the UE attaching to a specific APN.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to performing cell measurements in unlicensed frequency bands and/or in channels with interference. According to some embodiments, a wireless user equipment (UE) device may define a reference symbol vector for a cell. Each respective element of the reference symbol vector may correspond to a respective subcarrier of the cell that carries a respective reference symbol. The UE may perform channel estimation at each respective element of the reference symbol vector. The UE may estimate the cell strength of the cell by cross-correlating channel estimates of different elements of the reference symbol vector.

Abstract: A user equipment (UE) device may communicate according to a new device category satisfying specified QoS (quality of service) requirements while also satisfying specified link budget requirements, and/or additional optimization requirements. The UE device may communicate with a cellular base station according to a first mode of operation associated with the new device category, and may switch to communicating with the cellular base station according to a second mode of operation associated with a second (pre-existing) device category in response to the link budget requirements exceeding a specified value and the quality of service requirements not being sensitive. The UE device may also switch to communicating with the cellular base station according to a third mode of operation associated with a third (pre-existing) device type in response to the link budget requirement not exceeding the specified value, or the QoS requirements being sensitive and a downlink throughput requirement exceeding a specified throughput value.
