Abstract: Apparatus for testing an electronic smoking (e-smoking) device includes an electronic circuit for electronically activating an e-smoking device and causing the e-smoking device to generate a plurality of puffs by converting a wicking fluid therein into a plurality of puffs without a need for a human to physically contact the e-smoking device during puff generation, and a wireless controller for controlling the electronic circuit. The electronic circuit is configured for activating the e-smoking device to generate the plurality of puffs based on wireless signals received at the wireless controller. The apparatus is further configured for measuring a characteristic of the e-smoking device, which may include a rate of conversion of the wicking fluid to vapor as a function of time for the plurality of puffs.

Abstract: Devices and methods for generating an aerosol of a therapeutic agent and methods of using and preparing the same are disclosed. The device includes a heatable porous substrate (e.g., a porous metal or metal alloy) embedded with a composition containing a vaporizable carrier compound (e.g., a phospholipid) and at least one therapeutic agent. The device can be incorporated into a delivery device, such as a metered dose inhaler or an exposure chamber. When the heatable porous substrate is heated, such as by resistive heating, the carrier compound is vaporized and both it and the at least one therapeutic agent are carried out of the porous substrate and, upon cooling, form aerosol particles comprising the at least one therapeutic agent.

Abstract: The present application discloses compounds of e.g. formulae (2), (1A), (1B) or (1C) as selective atypical chemokine receptor 3 (ACKR3) modulators for the treatment of e.g. cancer, atherosclerotic vascular disease, cardiovascular diseases, fibrosis (e.g. cardiac fibrosis), inflammatory or autoimmune diseases and conditions, conditions of excessive or abnormal vascularization (e.g. wound healing), stem cell differentiation and mobilization disorders, brain and neuronal dysfunctions (e.g. Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and demyelinating diseases), kidney dysfunction, renal dysfunction, preeclampsia, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and obesity. Further provided are said compounds for use in methods for in vitro or ex vivo diagnosis, prediction, prognosis and/or monitoring of a disease or condition characterized by an aberrant level of ACKR3 polypeptide, as well as for use in in vitro methods for identifying an agent useful as a therapeutic. An exemplary compound is e.g. WW-1.

The desalination apparatus using a solvent extraction scheme includes a source water supply module configured to supply source water including salt of a first concentration and water, a functional solvent supply module configured to supply a functional solvent, of which the solubility in water varies according to temperature, a mixing module configured to mix the source water from the source water supply module and the functional solvent from the functional solvent supply module, a first separation module configured to receive mixture water, in which the source water and the functional solvent are mixed, from the mixing module, and dissolve the water contained in the source water in the functional solvent, a salt crystallization module configured to receive the source water including salt of a second concentration that is higher than the first concentration, from which the water has been removed, from the first separation module, and a second separation module configured to receive the functional solvent, in which the water has been dissolved, from the first separation module, and thermally separate the water and the functional solvent at a second temperature that is higher than the first temperature.

Abstract: A membrane assembly for separating a feed liquid into a permeate and a retentate includes a semipermeable membrane and conductive members for applying a voltage effective for charging a semipermeable surface of the membrane, thereby reducing or preventing fouling or scaling of the membrane. The conductive members may be positioned adjacent to the semipermeable membrane, and may be configured as feed spacers or permeate spacers. Alternatively or additionally, the membrane may be electrically conductive. Power from an external source may be supplied to one or more of the conductive members, or also the membrane if conductive, which may be done wirelessly. One or more membrane assemblies may be provided in a container. One or more membrane assemblies may be provided in a stacked configuration, or wrapped around a tube in a spiral configuration.

Abstract: A gas-liquid contacting apparatus and method are described, in which at least one rotor assembly including packing is arranged in a contacting chamber containing at least one stator assembly including at least one heat exchanger arranged to thermally modulate the gas-liquid contacting so that each stator assembly is operatively arranged with each stator assembly to provide gas-liquid contacting at temperatures effective for mass exchange between the gas and liquid. The rotor and stator assemblies may be of annular shape, or may be of disk shape in a stacked array of rotor assemblies alternating with stator assemblies. Such apparatus and method are usefully employed for CO2 capture from CO2-containing flue gases such as combustion effluents from power generation plants.

Abstract: A non-aqueous solvent system configured to remove acidic gas from a gas stream comprises a solution formed of a chemical absorption component and a physical absorption component. The chemical absorption component includes a nitrogenous base, wherein the nitrogenous base has a structure such that it reacts with a portion of the acidic gas. The physical absorption component includes an organic diluent that is non-reactive with the acidic gas and that has a structure such that it absorbs a portion of the acidic gas at a pressure above atmospheric pressure. The solvent system has a solubility with water of less than about 10 g of solvent per 100 mL of water.
