摘要： A fluid control valve suited to use as a prosthetic heart valve, has an annular seat member, and a disc, shaped in plan view to correspond with the radially inner portion of a transverse section of the seat, pivotally mounted in the seat for movement to and from a closure position. The disc is pivoted in off-set manner to define smaller and larger disc portions on opposite sides of the pivot axis, and has a non-symmetrical aerofoil cross-sectional shaping perpendicular to this axis with leading and trailing edges respectively located in the disc portions. Normally the seat inner portion will be longitudinally convergent, preferably conically or hyperboloidally so, and the disc will be elliptic.

摘要： Enzyme preparations which will convert cholesterol to Delta 4cholestenone and hydrogen peroxide are obtained from certain Nocardia species belonging to the Mycobacterium rhodocrous group. The preparations have a cholesterol oxidase specific activity of at least 1 unit per 5 mg of protein nitrogen and, when in liquid form, a potency of at least 10 2 units/ml. They are prepared by growing the organism and recovering the enzyme preparation, preferably by extracting the harvested cells with a surface active agent such as Triton X-100. The enzyme preparations are used to assay for cholesterol by measuring the amount in which one of the products of the cholesterol oxidase reaction, preferably hydrogen peroxide, is formed or the quantity in which oxygen is used.

摘要： Apparatus for carrying out a spatial transform between information in two displays is described. Where one display is a graphical input tablet with an overlay forming graduations for the tablet, a point may be selected using a stylus and a corresponding point for example in a C.R.T. display may be intensity emphasized. The co-ordinates of the selected point are combined and the resulting number is compared with a number related to the position of a data item in a series of such items giving rise to the C.R.T. display. The positions of the data items in the series are arranged to give the required spatial transform when the number relating to position in the series equals the number formed by combining the co-ordinates of a selected point.

摘要： A liquid-core fibre-optic waveguide comprising a hollow vitreous fibre filled with a liquid wherein the liquid is substantially a single compound, a mixture of compounds, or a single compound or a mixture of compounds dissolved in or diluted with a solvent, the said compound or compounds being selected from the class of aliphatic compounds which contain from three to seven carbon atoms per molecule and are fully halogenated with fluorine, chlorine, bromine or any combination thereof, such that the liquid is liquid at 25* centigrade, has a refractive index greater than that of the vitreous fibre and has minimal optical absorption and scattering throughout at least a substantial part of the spectral range from 0.5 to 2.0 microns. The preferred vitreous fibre is soda-lime borosilicate glass and the preferred liquid is hexachloro-1,3-butadiene. Alternative liquids are hexachloropropene and 1,4-difluoroctachlorobutane; a mixture of any two or all three of these compounds may be used in a silica or quartz fibre. Heating or the addition of a solvent may be used to facilitate the filling of the fibre with the liquid. The preferred solvents are carbon tetrachloride and tetrachloroethylene but bromo-trichloromethane or tribromofluoromethane could alternatively be used.

摘要： An endoprosthetic scapular glenoid component is provided with a concave bearing surface of elongated part-spherical shape significantly less than hemispherical extent. The surface forms the larger end face of a generally frusto-pyramidal body of which the side faces have a relieved structure for fixation in the scapular with gap-filling cement. The pyramidal body is preferably quadrilateral with two opposed planar side faces and the other two convexly rounded. For use in a total shoulder joint device, the glenoid component can be associated with a variety of generally spherically headed, intramedullary stemmed, humeral components. Preferably the humeral component head is of minor segmental form, and the stem inclined relative to the head over a major free end portion of its length.
