Abstract: Devices for detecting microorganism strains or target cellular analytes are provided. The device includes a filter holder, the filter holder comprising a tip portion; a nonwoven article disposed on the tip portion of the filter holder; and an adaptor attacked to the filter holder, the adaptor defining an aperture. Methods of detecting microorganisms and/or cellular analytes in a fluid sample using the devices are also provided. The method includes obtaining the device; placing a lumened or cannulated device in fluid communication with the device; and passing a fluid sample suspected of containing at least one microorganism strain or target cellular analyte from the lumened or cannulated device through the device and contacting the nonwoven article. The method further includes contacting the nonwoven article with at least one detection reagent and detecting the presence of the at least one microorganism strain or target cellular analyte concentrated by the nonwoven article. Kits and systems including the devices are also provided.

Abstract: Fluid sensing devices including a layer of fluid absorption and distribution material are provided. The layer includes a porous fibrous nonwoven matrix for absorbing fluid from the object to the first major surface of the layer and laterally distributing the absorbed fluid throughout the layer and to a second major surface of the layer opposite the first major surface. Hydration sensors are disposed on the second major surface of the layer to measure a hydration level.

Abstract: Guanidine-functionalized particles and methods of making and using such particles are provided, such as guanidine-functionalized metal silicate particles. The nonwoven article may be used, for instance, for removing microorganisms from an aqueous sample by contacting a fluid sample with the nonwoven article such that at least a portion of the microorganisms are removed from the fluid sample.

Abstract: A process comprises (a) providing (1) at least one sample suspected of comprising at least one coliform strain, (2) at least one culture device comprising at least one culture medium that is hydrated or hydratable, and (3) at least one particulate concentration agent that is substantially optically transparent when in contact with the culture medium in the culture device when the culture medium is hydrated; (b) placing the particulate concentration agent in contact with the sample such that at least a portion of the coliform strain is bound to the particulate concentration agent to form coliform-bound particulate concentration agent; (c) placing the coliform-bound particulate concentration agent in contact with the culture medium; (d) incubating the culture device comprising the coliform-bound particulate concentration agent in contact with the culture medium, the culture medium being hydrated; and (e) optically detecting the presence of the coliform strain without separating the coliform strain from the particulate concentration agent.

Abstract: Nonwoven articles for detecting microorganisms or cellular analytes in a fluid sample are provided. The nonwoven article includes a fibrous porous matrix and concentration agent particles enmeshed in the fibrous porous matrix. Abstract: Porous devices are provided that include a particle-containing fibrous porous matrix and a fluid absorbed in the particle-containing porous fibrous nonwoven matrix. The particle-containing fibrous porous matrix includes a porous fibrous nonwoven matrix containing first polyolefin fibers, second polyolefin fibers including poly(ethylene), and fiberglass fibers; and microorganism-binding particles. The microorganism-binding particles are enmeshed in said porous fibrous nonwoven matrix. Methods of debridement are provided including providing a porous device including a particle-containing fibrous porous matrix and wiping a wound or an area of skin with the device; and providing a porous device including a porous fibrous nonwoven matrix and wiping a wound with the device. Further, kits are provided including a sterile package containing at least one porous device, and typically also instructions for debridement.
