Abstract: Substrates such as transparent glass layers or other transparent substrates may be used to form protective display cover layers, windows, housing structures, camera windows, and other structures. Coatings may be formed on the substrates, on pixel arrays such as flexible organic light-emitting diode pixel arrays, housing structures, and other structures. The coatings may have optical properties arising from the inclusion of pigment flakes in a clear polymer binder. The pigment flakes may be formed from a thin-film interference layer. The thin-film interference filter layer may have a stack of dielectric layers with a pattern of refractive index values selected to adjust the optical properties of the pigment flakes. The stack of dielectric layers may be configured to form an infrared-light-blocking-and-visible-light-transmitting optical characteristic for the coatings and/or may have other desired spectral properties.

Abstract: An electronic device may include electrical components and other components mounted within a housing. The device may have a display on a front face of the device and may have a glass layer that forms part of the housing on a rear face of the device. The glass layer and other glass structures in the electronic device may be provided with coatings. An interior coating on a glass layer may include multiple layers of material such as an adhesion promotion layer, thin-film layers of materials such as silicon, niobium oxide and other metal oxides, and metals to help adjust the appearance of the coating. A metal layer may be formed on top of the coating to serve as an environmental protection layer and opacity enhancement layer. In some configurations, the coating may include four layers.

Abstract: An electronic device may have transparent structures. The transparent structures may include a transparent member such as a transparent button member, a transparent member that serves as a display cover layer, a transparent member that covers a sensor such as a touch sensor, or other transparent member. The transparent member may have an inner surface that is covered with an opaque masking layer that is free of materials that discolor upon light exposure and that is formed from a layer of polymer and light-scattering inclusions such as solid particles, hollow microspheres, porous particles, and voids. A protective layer such as an inorganic layer may be formed over the polymer layer. A fingerprint sensor, touch sensor, or other structures may be attached to the opaque masking layer using a layer of adhesive.

Using a budgeted amount of compressive stress and tensile stress, asymmetric chemical strengthening is optimized for the utility of a glass article. In some aspects, the strengthened glass article can be designed for reduced damage, or damage propagation, when dropped.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a display with a cover layer. A light-based component such as an infrared-light proximity sensor or other infrared-light-based component may be aligned with a window in the display cover layer. The window may block visible light and transmit infrared light. A coating in the window may include a thin-film filter formed from a stack of inorganic dielectric layers. The thin-film filter may block visible light and transmit infrared light. The coating may also include at least one layer of material such as a semiconductor material that absorbs visible light and that passes infrared light. This material may be interposed between the thin-film filter and the display cover layer. Antireflection properties and color adjustment properties may be provided using thin-film layers between the thin-film filter and the display cover layer.

Abstract: A protective film configured to protect a substrate such as a glass panel for a display is provided. The protective film may include a discontinuous outer layer including a multitude of panels and gaps positioned therebetween. Further, the protective film may include a flexible layer positioned between the discontinuous outer layer and the substrate. When panels of the discontinuous outer layer are impacted by a foreign object, the force may be transferred to the flexible layer, rather than propagating through the outer layer. In this regard, the gaps between the panels of the discontinuous outer layer may prevent the formation of cracks that may otherwise occur. Related assemblies and methods are also provided.

Abstract: A foldable display may have a display cover layer and display panel that bend around a bend axis. The display panel may have an array of pixels configured to display an image through the display cover layer. The display cover layer may be formed from a layer of glass. A recess may be formed in the layer of glass that extends along and overlaps the bend axis. The recess forms a flexible locally thinned portion in the glass that allows the display cover layer to bend. Polymer may be formed in the recess. Stiffening structures such as glass strips and glass beads of one or more diameters may be embedded in the polymer to help resist inward compression of the surface of the display cover layer in the locally thinned region while allowing the display cover layer to bend about the bend axis.

The coupled layers may have one or more recesses or other structures to visually distinguish different regions of the glass layer.
