Abstract: One embodiment is directed to an open radio access network to provide wireless coverage for a plurality of cells at a site and that comprises a virtualized headend comprising one or more base-station nodes and a plurality of unified remote units deployed at the site. Each of the unified remote units is able to support multiple functional splits, multiple wireless interface protocols, multiple generations of radio access technology, and multiple frequency bands. The unified remote units and functional split used to serve each cell can be changed (for example, on-the-fly as a part of an automatic or manual adaptation process that is a function of one or more monitored performance attributes of the open radio access network such as network bandwidth, network latency, processing load, or processing performance). The unified remote units can be implemented in a modular manner with a backplane to which different radio modules can be coupled.

Abstract: In an embodiment, a remote antenna unit includes a transmitter, a receiver, an antenna, a first interference circuit, and a second interference circuit. The transmitter is configured to generate a transmit signal, and the receiver configured to process a receive signal. The antenna is coupled to the transmitter and the receiver and is configured to radiate a downlink signal in response to the transmit signal and generate the receive signal in response to an uplink signal. The first interference circuit is coupled to the transmitter and the receiver and is configured to receive an analog signal from the transmitter. The second interference circuit coupled to the transmitter and the receiver. The first interference circuit and the second interference circuit are configured to reduce, in the receive signal, interference caused by the transmit signal and/or at least one downlink signal radiated by an antenna.

Abstract: A mobile communication system includes: a first antenna for receiving communication signals; processing circuitry for processing received communication signals; a second antenna for transmitting processed signals. The processing circuitry utilizes at least one configurable setting for processing received communication signals, the configurable setting being adaptable for varying the processing of received communication signals as the system moves through a mobile environment. The processing circuitry configured to: receive, over time, input representing current geographical location of the system; determine whether the system is entering a first geographical zone based on the input representing the current geographical location and path of system; and automatically adapt the configurable setting as the system enters the first geographical zone, wherein adaptation of configurable setting is based on known signal characteristics associated with the received signals from mobile devices in the first geographical zone.

Abstract: A master unit for use within a distributed antenna system includes: re-sampling devices configured to output re-sampled digital downlink signals by re-sampling digital downlink signals at customized resample rates based on at least one factor, the re-sampled digital downlink signals having a smaller bandwidth than the digital downlink signals; and a framer configured to multiplex the re-sampled digital downlink signals and to generate a first frame that includes the re-sampled digital downlink signals as framed data for transport to one or more remote units of the distributed antenna system, wherein the one or more remote units of the distributed antenna system are configured to transmit radio frequency signals using at least one antenna, wherein the transmitted radio frequency signals are derived from the framed data of the first frame received from the master unit.

Abstract: Certain aspects involve a wideband remote unit. The wideband remote unit can include one or more antennas and an analog-to-digital converter (“ADC”). The antenna can receive wideband signals. The wideband signals can include an uplink RF signal and a leaked downlink RF signal. The uplink RF signal can have an uplink signal power at or near a noise level. The leaked downlink RF signal can have a downlink signal power greater than the uplink signal power. The ADC can convert the received wideband signals to digital RF signals representing the uplink signal and the downlink signal. The wideband remote unit can transmit the digital RF signals to a unit of a DAS that is in communication with a base station.

Abstract: A method includes: receiving downlink signals at a head end unit of a distributed antenna system from at least one base station; processing the downlink signals into downlink channelized digital baseband signals at the head end unit by at least one of channel filtering, interpolating, and mixing with an oscillator, the downlink channelized digital baseband signals including call information for wireless communication; formatting the downlink channelized digital baseband signals for transport together at the head end unit; packetizing and packet scheduling the downlink channelized digital baseband signals into downlink packetized baseband signals at the head end unit; and transmitting the downlink packetized baseband signals from the head end unit to remotely located units of the distributed antenna system.

An antenna structure comprises: a transmit antenna element comprising a plurality of transmit antenna sub-elements; a receive antenna element comprising a plurality of receive antenna sub-elements, wherein the transmit antenna element and the receive antenna element are orthogonally-polarized with respect to each other; a ground plane defining a reflector for the antenna structure; at least one electronic component coupled with the ground plane, the at least one electronic component comprising: a transmit balanced to unbalanced (BALUN) circuit configured to split a transmit signal from a transmitter into two balanced transmit signals, wherein the plurality of transmit antenna sub-elements are coupled to the transmit BALUN; and a receive BALUN circuit configured to combine feeds from the plurality of receive antenna sub-elements into a receive single output to a receiver.
