Abstract: A rotary actuator for use in surgical instruments is provided, including a plurality of engine elements placed symmetrically around a rotation axis; a disk in contact with the engine elements, centered on the rotation axis, the engine elements providing a first rotation to the disk; an input shaft coupled to the disk to rotate with the first rotation; and a coupling mechanism to provide a second rotation to an output shaft from the first rotation of the input shaft. A surgical manipulator is also provided, including a base to provide stability and support; a first rotary actuator as above coupled to the base; and a first arm coupled to the rotary actuator.

Abstract: A medical instrument system comprises an instrument manipulator configured to control a position of a medical instrument with respect to a base. The instrument manipulator comprises an instrument carriage comprising a medical instrument connector configured to engage the medical instrument. The instrument carriage is configured to translate along a linear axis to advance or retract the medical instrument with respect to the base. The medical instrument system also comprises an insertion stage slideably engaged with the instrument carriage along the linear axis. The insertion stage has a drive assembly comprising a drive belt and a drive motor configured to drive the drive belt. The base is fixedly coupled to the drive belt. The medical instrument system also comprises a connecting element having a distal end fixedly coupled to the drive belt and a proximal end fixed to the instrument carriage.

Abstract: A device includes a first mechanism having a surface and a helical slot in the surface, a second mechanism having a periphery and an axial slot in the periphery, and an insert comprising a pin. The second mechanism is located within the first mechanism. The insert is located within the second mechanism. The pin extends from the insert through the axial slot of the second mechanism and into the helical slot of the first mechanism. The insert is configured to couple to an instrument. In some embodiments, the insert is configured to move the instrument in a degree of freedom in response to the second mechanism being held stationary and the first mechanism being rotated. In some embodiments, the degree of freedom is an insertion and retraction degree of freedom.

Abstract: Systems and methods for safe operation of a device include a control system having a memory and a processor coupled to the memory. The processor is configured to determine, using one or more sensors, whether an operator is in contact with an input control of a console coupled to the system. The processor is further configured to affect commanded motion of the device using the input control in response to the determination of operator contact with the input control. In some embodiments, affecting the commanded motion includes limiting commanded motion of the device using the input control in response to determining the operator is not in contact with the input control. In some embodiments, the limited commanded motion is an insertion motion of the elongate device, a retraction motion of the elongate device, or a steering motion of a distal end of the elongate device.

Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling an elongate device include a console. The console includes a first recess and a removable first input control for controlling motion of the medical device. The console also may include one or more first sensors located about the first recess that detect motion of the first input control and detect operator contact with the first input control. The console also may include an integrated display screen arranged to display status information for the medical device. In some embodiments, the first input control controls an insertion depth or steering of the medical device, and may be in the form of a scroll wheel forming a part of a removable control assembly.

Abstract: A surgical instrument comprises a housing and a valve mounted in the housing. The valve is configured to control a flow of a fluid into or out of a surgical site in response to either a robotic actuation of the valve or a manual actuation of the valve. The valve comprises a valve shaft, a receiving member structurally coupled to the valve shaft, and a manual actuation component structurally coupled to the valve shaft and extending from the housing. The receiving member is configured to releasably couple to a driver of a robotic manipulator to receive the robotic actuation from the driver remotely controlled by a surgeon to adjust a state of the valve. The manual actuation component is configured to receive the manual actuation to adjust the state of the valve.
