Abstract: An optical ferrule includes an input surface for receiving and transmitting a central light ray from an optical fiber attached to the optical ferrule. A light redirecting side receives, along a first direction, the central light ray transmitted by the input surface and redirects the received light along a different second direction. The redirected central light ray exits the optical ferrule through an output surface of the optical ferrule. As the central light ray propagates in the optical ferrule from the input surface to the output surface, the central light ray propagates through distinct first and second portions of the optical ferrule having different respective first and second compositions.

Abstract: A heads up display (HUD) includes a display source for emitting an emitted image, a windshield and an absorbing polarizer. For substantially normally incident light, the absorbing polarizer substantially transmits the incident light polarized along a pass direction, and substantially absorbs the incident light polarized along a block direction. The emitted image includes at least one image ray that is received and transmitted by the absorbing polarizer toward the windshield at a first location of the absorbing polarizer. The transmitted image ray is received and reflected by the windshield at a second location of the windshield. A first normal line of the absorbing polarizer at the first location is substantially parallel to a projection of the transmitted image ray onto the windshield. Further, the pass direction of the absorbing polarizer at the first location is substantially parallel to a second normal line of the windshield at the second location.

The polymer matrix composites are useful, for example, as filters.

Abstract: An article of personal protective equipment (PPE) includes a battery, a charging circuit, and a controller. The battery is configured to power one or more components of the article of PPE. The charging circuit is configured to receive electrical power from a power supply and supply an electric current to the battery. The controller is configured to determine a plurality of thresholds of one or more electrical parameters of the battery. The plurality of thresholds has progressively increasing values. The controller is further configured to determine the one or more electrical parameters of the battery and control the charging circuit to progressively decrease a magnitude of the electric current supplied to the battery when the one or more electrical parameters progressively increase above each threshold from the plurality of thresholds.

Abstract: Medical articles include a tube prepared from a polymer composition containing one or more extractable components. At least a portion of the exterior surface of the tube contains an anti-microbial layer. A transparent vapor-deposited coating of a barrier polymer derived from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer covers the exterior surface of the tube. The barrier coating reduces the extraction of extractable component(s) from the tube, but permits the anti-microbial to pass through the barrier layer and provide anti-microbial activity on the barrier surface.

Abstract: Curable adhesive films, primers for adhesion of curable adhesive films, and adhesive systems comprising adhesive films and primers are provided. In some embodiments, an adhesive system comprises: I) a curable adhesive free-standing film comprising a blend of a) a first film-forming polymer or oligomer; b) a first species comprising first unsaturated free-radically polymerizable groups, which may be a) or a species other than a); and c) a first transition metal cation; and II) a primer for adhesion of a curable adhesive free-standing film to a first substrate comprising an oxidizing agent. In some embodiments, an adhesive system comprises: I) a curable adhesive free-standing film comprising an outer surface bearing embossed air bleed channels capable of aiding in escape of air during application of the outer surface to a primed substrate; and II) a primer comprising components that initiate cure of the curable adhesive free-standing film.

Abstract: Techniques, systems and articles are described for preparing electrical cables for connections to a power grid. In one example, a system includes a cable preparation device configured to cut one or more layers of an electrical cable and a computing device configured to control the cable preparation device to cut the one or more layers of the electrical cable. The computing device may determine one or more target cutting distances and determine whether an actual cutting distance satisfies the target cutting distance. The computing device may detect defects in the electrical cable. The computing device may further determine whether the cable preparation device should be serviced.

Abstract: A replacement part validation system is presented that includes a scanning system that scans a received part and provides the scan results of the received part. The system also includes a part recognition module that, based on the received scan results of the received part and provides a part identification and a part quality metric. The system also includes a job assignment module that assigns the received part to an outstanding repair job. The system also includes an output generator that outputs the outstanding repair job and the part quality metric. The system also includes a computing processor that, based on the received scanned results, causes the part recognition module to review a database of parts and retrieve a most-likely match. The part quality metric is based on a comparison of the received part to the most-likely match. The computing processor causes the output generator to output the outstanding repair job and part quality metric to a source.
