摘要: A temperature-specific compound applied to refractory substrates having molten metal-contacting surfaces creates a chemically active and viscous surface that dramatically increases the ability of the treated substrate to remove slag, dross and other inclusions from a base metal alloy as it passes through or contacts the substrate. The refractory substrates include molten metal filters used by foundries and metal casters such as reticulated ceramic foam, cellular/honeycomb, silica mesh, and others that rely on their physical or sieving ability to remove particulate impurities from the base alloy being cast. The chemically active surfaces significantly increase filtration efficiency through a treatment process tailored to the specific chemistry of the alloy being filtered, such as ferrous metals that include iron, steel and more. Other refractory substrates such as aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, zirconium oxide, aluminum silicate, silicon carbide (as common with reticulated ceramic foam filters) and the like may also include the coatings.

摘要: A permeable, resin-bonded composition is described, which finds utility as a porous element in a gas-injection nozzle. The permeable composition is notably useful in a canless, resin-bonded, gas-injection nozzle, characterized by an impermeable, resin-bonded composition replaces the metal can. Advantageously, the resin-bonded compositions include an oxygen getter for scrubbing oxygen before the oxygen can reach the molten steel. A method of manufacturing the nozzle is described and includes copressing a standard, resin-bonded composition around the permeable, resin-bonded composition. The pressed piece may be cured at temperatures below about 800° C.

摘要: Parts subject to wear, which come into contact with metal melts, are formed with a hydraulically setting high-alumina refractory concrete having a compression strength when cold, measured on dried crude product, of at least 400 kp/cm.sup.2. The compression strength is at least 700 kp/cm.sup.2 after firing at 1400.degree. C. The refractory concrete has a dimensional stability at 1400.degree. C. of at least plus or minus 0.2%. The refractory concrete contains corundum and active alumina as aggregates, an alumina .[.concrete.]. .Iadd.cement .Iaddend.containing less than 22% lime and, as required, a thinning agent. Up to 5% of the aggregates can be replaced by a spinel-forming substance preferably MgO or MgO-yielding compounds; or up to 5% of the aggregates can be replaced by carbon black, pitch or graphite; or up to 7% of the aggregates can be replaced by chromium oxide. Aggregates under 0.5 mm can be present in the refractory concrete as round grains. Preferably, the refractory concrete is used for slide-valve plates and/or base plates of slide-valve closure members on containers containing steel melts. The moulded parts can be impregnated with tar.

摘要: Build-up on the surface of a refractory body receiving molten metal is eliminated or reduced by making at least a portion of a material that can be electrically heated to at least about 1150.degree. C., such as an alkaline-earth doped lanthanum chromite. When the surface is that of a nozzle or shroud, an electric current is supplied to heat the material around the opening in the nozzle or shroud to at least about 1150.degree. C.

摘要: A refractory composition for flow casting consists essentially of 100 parts by weight of refractory material, 0.1 to 2 parts by weight of sparingly water-soluble aluminum tripolyphosphate, 0.2 to 3 parts by weight of alkali metal silicate, 0.5 to 5 parts by weight of clay, up to 2/5 part by weight of organic binder per amount of clay, and 0.2 to 4 parts by weight of at least one hardening promoting reagent selected from the group consisting of calcium silicate and calcium aluminate.
