Abstract: The present disclosure relates to an active rear collision avoidance apparatus and method. The apparatus includes a sensor for acquiring information by detecting at least one of a preceding vehicle, a vehicle at risk of collision or other vehicles; and a controller for determining a possibility of collision between the vehicle at risk of collision and the host vehicle, determining a direction of avoidance preferentially from where an avoidable area exists in response to the driving of the vehicle at risk of collision, if the possibility of collision is higher than or equal to a threshold point, controlling the host vehicle to drive to avoid in the determined direction of avoidance, and controlling the host vehicle to drive to avoid a possible collision in response to a response to the transmitted avoidance request signal from the preceding vehicle and/or the other vehicle.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer program product are provided for dynamically detecting pedestrian activity. The method includes receiving one or more data objects from a vehicle. The one or more data objects may be processed using an image processing model to determine one or more pedestrian parameters. The method further includes determining whether the one or more pedestrian parameters satisfy one or more pedestrian parameter thresholds. In an instance the one or more pedestrian parameters do not satisfy the one or more pedestrian parameter thresholds, the method further includes causing a safety alert warning to be provided to one or more other vehicles. Corresponding apparatuses and computer program products are also provided.

Abstract: A vehicular multi-sensor system includes a plurality of sensors that include at least a camera and a 3D point-cloud LIDAR. The forward-viewing camera views (i) a traffic lane of a multi-lane road being traveled along by the equipped vehicle and (ii) another traffic lane of the multi-lane road, and the field of sensing of said 3D point-cloud LIDAR sensor at least encompasses the other traffic lane of the multi-lane road. Image data captured by the forward-viewing camera is provided to and is processed at an electronic control unit (ECU). 3D point-cloud LIDAR data captured by the 3D point-cloud LIDAR sensor is provided to and processed at the ECU. Responsive at least in part to processing at the ECU of 3D point-cloud LIDAR data captured by said 3D point-cloud LIDAR sensor, the ECU detects a traffic participant or pedestrian or other vehicle present exterior of the equipped vehicle.

Abstract: A collision avoidance method and system for a mobile robot crossing a road. When a mobile robot approaches a road, it senses road conditions via at least one first sensor, and initiates road crossing if the road conditions are deemed suitable for crossing. As it crosses the road, the mobile robot senses, via at least one second sensor, a change in the road conditions indicating the presence of at least one hazardous moving object. In response to determining that at least one hazardous object in present, the mobile robot initiates a collision avoidance maneuver. A mobile robot configured to avoid collisions while crossing a road includes: at least one first sensor configured to sense road conditions, at least one second sensor configured to sense road conditions, and a processing component configured to carry out one or more collision avoidance maneuvers.

Abstract: One variation of a method for accessing supplemental data from other vehicles includes, at an autonomous vehicle: recording a scan image of a scene around the autonomous vehicle at a first time; detecting insufficient perception data in a region of the scan image; in response to detecting insufficient perception data in the region, defining a ground area of interest containing the region and wirelessly broadcasting a query for perception data representing objects within the ground area of interest; in response to receiving supplemental perception data—representing objects within the ground area of interest detected by the second vehicle at approximately the first time—from a second vehicle proximal the scene, incorporating the supplemental perception data into the scan image to form a composite scan image; selecting a navigational action based on objects in the scene represented by the composite scan image; and autonomously executing the navigational action.

Abstract: Method and apparatus herein are for inter-vehicle cooperation for physical exterior damage detection. An example vehicle includes an inter-vehicle communication module and a body control module. The body control module is to monitors an area around the vehicle and characteristics of the vehicle to detect a triggering event and, in response to detecting the trigger event, broadcasts a request for images. Additionally, the body control module generates a composite image based on the images and compares the composite image to a reference image to identify damage on the vehicle. In response to identifying damage, the body control module takes an action specified by an operator.
