Abstract: A radio frequency (RF) transmitter for self-sensing power and phase of an RF signal is provided. A local oscillator (LO) is configured to generate a LO signal. A power amplifier is configured to generate the RF signal from the LO signal, wherein the LO and RF signals are periodic signals sharing a waveform and a frequency. An IQ de-modulator is configured to down convert the LO signal and the RF signal into an in-phase (I) signal and a quadrature (Q) signal, wherein direct current (DC) voltages respectively of the I and Q signals define power and phase of the RF signal. A method for self-sensing power and phase of an RF signal, and a radar system within which the RF transmitter is arranged, are also provided.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for wideband envelope tracking systems are disclosed herein. In certain implementations, an envelope tracker includes a DC-to-DC converter, a current digital-to-analog converter (DAC), an error amplifier, a feedback circuit, and an AC combiner. The current DAC receives a digital envelope signal, and uses the digital envelope signal to generate an envelope current. The feedback circuit is connected between an output and an inverting input of the error amplifier, and the envelope current is provided to the error amplifier's inverting input. Additionally, the AC combiner generates a power amplifier supply voltage by combining an output of the DC-to-DC converter and an output of the error amplifier.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for envelope shaping in a mobile device are provided. In certain implementations, a mobile device includes an envelope tracker configured to control a voltage level of a power amplifier supply voltage based on a shaped envelope signal, a power amplifier configured to receive the power amplifier supply voltage and to provide amplification to a radio frequency signal, and a transceiver including a modulator configured to generate the radio frequency signal and an envelope shaping circuit configured to generate the shaped envelope signal by shaping an envelope of the radio frequency signal. The envelope shaping circuit includes a shaping table configured to maintain a substantially constant distortion in a transmit band of the mobile device across a range of the envelope of the radio frequency signal.

Abstract: A transmitter according to an exemplary aspect of the present invention includes: a modulation circuit configured to modulate a baseband signal into a multi-bit digital signal including a component in a radio-frequency band; a plurality of switch-mode power amplifiers corresponding to each bit of the multi-bit digital signal output from the modulation circuit; and a signal synthesis circuit including a band limiting unit configured to perform a band limitation on output signals from the plurality of switch-mode power amplifiers, and a plurality of voltage-to-current converting units configured to perform a voltage-to-current conversion on respective output signals from the plurality of switch-mode power amplifiers, the signal synthesis circuit configured to makes a synthesized signal connecting the band limiting unit and the plurality of voltage-to-current converting units, wherein, depending on an output power at a synthesis point where the synthesized signal is made, a switch-mode power amplifier is selected which is configured to receive input of a pulse, and a pulse number of pulses to be inputted into the selected switch-mode power amplifier is controlled.

The amplifier device is formed in and on a semiconductor substrate. The semiconductor substrate supports metallization levels of a back end of line structure. The metal lines of the inductive input element, inductive output element and inductive degeneration element are formed within one or more of the metallization levels. The inductive input element has a spiral shape and the an amplifier circuit, an inductive output element and an inductive degeneration element are located within the spiral shape.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods for envelope tracking systems are disclosed herein. In certain implementations, an envelope tracking system for generating a power amplifier supply voltage for a power amplifier is provided. The envelope tracking system includes a DC-to-DC converter that generates a regulated voltage from a battery voltage and controls a voltage of the regulated voltage using a low frequency feedback signal. The envelope tracking system further includes an error amplifier that generates an output current using an envelope signal and a high frequency feedback signal. The low frequency feedback signal is based on a low frequency component of the power amplifier supply voltage and the high frequency feedback signal is based on a high frequency component of the power amplifier supply voltage. The error amplifier generates the power amplifier supply voltage by adjusting the magnitude of the regulated voltage using the output current.

Abstract: A digital quadrature modulator holds local oscillator circuitry configured to provide local oscillator signals, and local oscillator polarity logic circuitry configured to select an In-phase and a Quadrature local oscillator signal according to a sign bit of an In-phase control word and a sign bit of a Quadrature control word, respectively. The modulator holds a number of local oscillator control logic circuits, each configured to generate a conditioned signal by gating one or both of the selected local oscillator signals according to values of the In-phase control word and/or values of the Quadrature control word. The modulator has one or more sets of switched-capacitor units, where each unit has an output provided by an output capacitor, and where a signal at the input side of the output capacitor is controlled by a conditioned signal. The outputs of at least two of the switched-capacitor units are combined in a common node.
