Apparatus for detaching helmet-mounted equipment (6) from the helmet (4) of a vehicle-mounted user (1) includes a quick-release fastening (8) securing the equipment to the helmet. A removal cord (11) passes from the equipment by way of a guide (10) and is attached to the vehicle (12). The action of the apparatus is to remove the equipment from the helmet to a position of safety when the user has to leave the vehicle in an emergency.

A wet type survival suit, particularly useful for oil rig workers or pilots and crew members stranded in water, includes an outer layer of material including a sheet of breathing material sandwiched between layers of fire protection material, a middle layer of insulation material that provides flotation, and an inner layer of fire protection material. This arrangement protects against fire, allows perspiration to evaporate, and allows the user to float in water. Suit adjusting laces are provided to adjust the suit to a comfortable configuration for the user. Zippers close the suit to a tight fit for use in water and can be loosened to reduce the restriction when desired.

The device, which can be used to protect the pilots of high performance aircraft against the effect of accelerations, comprises a garment having at least trousers having pockets and a control member which supplies the pockets with compressed gas when the downwardly directed acceleration of the body exceeds a predetermined threshold. The control member is adapted to establish in the trouser pockets an overpressure from a positive acceleration threshold (BC), in accordance with a substantially linear law of variation from an origin (A) corresponding to a negative acceleration. The action of the compressed gas can be supplemented by that of a liquid contained in the pockets and also subjected to the pressure of the gas.

An anti-G valve and control system for providing a multivariable, multi-profile, pressurization of aircrew anti-G garments are disclosed. The ramp characteristic, the ramp onset level, a step onset, the step level, a limit pressure, are all controllable over the normal operating range. In addition, an optional ready pressure control is provided to just fill the anti-G suit volume and greatly decrease inflation time required to reach higher pressures.

An instrument flight training hood including a voltage-controlled, liquid crystal viewing lens operable to a first state of transparency when a wearer is viewing the instrument control panel of his aircraft and operable to a second state of opacity to instantaneously occlude viewing when wearer changes his line of vision outside of the aircraft. A uniform passageway recessed within the hood directionally communicates light received from an area of space substantially along the wearer's line of sight, to a photocell for lens state actuation responsive to a manually preset light intensity threshold. A manual switching arrangement permits maintenance of lens transparency to provide vertigo simulation capabilities upon flight landing approach whereby wearer changing his line of sight outside of the aircraft to occlude his viewing, and thereafter manually switching the lens to its transparent state enters a condition of vertigo.

In an electronic version of the present invention, the potentiometer is cected to an aircraft control stick for sensing the position thereof. The output is coupled to logic circuits that detect the position of the control stick, associated with a severe maneuver about the pitch axis. Such detection actuates a valve for preinflation of a G-suit. Additional logic circuits are provided for detecting when the rate of control stick movement exceeds a preselected threshold. This, also corresponds with a severe maneuver about the pitch axis of the aircraft and also serves to actuate the G-suit valve. Analogous fluidic components may be utilized to effectuate equivalent operation of the G-suit.

For flying personnel there is provided a hard shell helmut suitably padded and held out of close contact with the head. An integrated visor assembly has an articulated attachment to the helmet movable between an operative position over the wearer''s face and a lifted position extending over the top of the helmut removed from the face. Compound leverage elements making up the attachment determine a path of movement for the visor assembly such that it travels an irregular path allowing it to first lift clear of contact with the face and then travel upwardly to its lifted position. An inflatable seal extends around the perimeter of the visor assembly, the seal being inflated with air from the oxygen supply for the breathing mask when in operation over the face of the wearer and being collapsed when deflated providing additional clearance for ease of removal from the face and for storage in its lifted position.

The invention is directed toward improved breathing comfort for an aviator subjected to rarified atmosphere at high altitudes. It employs a vest or jerkin which can be fitted by zipper over a passive pressure unit. The vest has secured to its interior a bladder which extends from front thigh up over the shoulder to the rear thigh position. A standard form of helmet is hermetically sealed to the neckline of the vest. Oxygen under pressure is introduced into the bladder and the helmet through a hand-operated valve which may be secured to the vest. This valve has three positions, (1) ''''Off,'''' (2) ''''Fill'''' and (3) ''''Mission Complete'''' and has a single tubing to the helmet and a double tubing to the bladder. One of the latter is employed for supplying the bladder with gas. The other of the double tubing contains a pressure-operated check valve which closes the passage between the helmet and the bladder in the event of bladder failure. The aviator would normally turn the valve, first to position (1) to supply the helmet with oxygen and to exhaust the interior of the bladder. He would then turn to position (2) which continues the oxygen supply to the helmet, and in addition, would fill the bladder with oxygen at a pressure as would make breathing more comfortable as the higher altitudes are reached. In the event that the bladder becomes punctured with flake or shrapnel and therefore unable to retain the gas, the valve is moved to position (3) to cause the oxygen, in excess of that necessary for the helmet, to escape to ambient atmosphere through the check valve.
