    Abstract: A ski binding reduces a likelihood of injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the tibia is accomplished by absorption in the binding to limit loads transmitted through the boot-binding interface. Release based on an injury threshold includes a binding response tower attached to the ski and adapted for selective engagement with the ski, such that the binding response tower permits biased vertical and lateral horizontal displacement, prior to a release threshold. The binding is in communication with the boot heel and is adapted for slideable engagement in response to vertical and lateral forces exerted from the boot heel. The binding response tower adapted to disengage, or release upon reaching at least one a predetermined lateral displacement or a predetermined vertical displacement, such as when the boot heel is forced sufficiently sideways or upwards due to skier movement that would tend to cause an ACL injury.

    Abstract: Variable stiffness devices and methods of their use are provided. In some embodiments, a variable stiffness device comprises an inner member defining a compartment for receiving an actuating fluid; an outer member disposed around the inner member; and a granular medium disposed between the inner member and the outer member; wherein the inner member is being moveable in a radial direction from a relaxed state to an expanded state by introducing the actuating fluid into the compartment of the inner member to compress the granular medium against the outer member to increase the stiffness of the device.

    Abstract: A real-time arrhythmia discrimination method is used in smartphones, which can discriminate between NSR, AF, PACs and PVCs using pulsatile time series collected from a smartphone's camera. To increase the sensitivity of AF detection and add the new capabilities of PVC and PAC identification, the arrhythmia discrimination method of these teachings combines Root Mean Square of Successive RR Differences (RMSSD), Shannon Entropy (ShE) and turning point ratio (TPR), with the Poincare plot, and utilizes the features of pulse rise/fall time and amplitude for arrhythmia discrimination.

    Abstract: A noncontact temperature sensing device receives radiative emissions from a sensed object to measure radiant heat flux and computes a temperature using multiple photodiode sensors, or elements, each sensitive to a different bandwidth of near IR light. The device samples a fluctuating heat source such as a flame or explosion at a fast sampling frequency, and compares corresponding or simultaneous readings in each bandwidth for computing a ratio of the respective bands and determining a temperature via ratio pyrometry. Multiple sensors of adjacent bands each receive corresponding readings of near IR emissions, perform fast, concurrent sampling to mitigate inconsistencies of heat source fluctuations, and compute a temperature based on a ratio between the sampled readings of the different bands. Near IR detection allows common and inexpensive photodiodes to be employed, and the photoelectric rather than thermoelectric sensing allows faster sampling and at a greater distance from the sensed heat source.

A virtual-reality headset includes at least one panel on the virtual reality headset that is capable of being adjusted to increase or decrease opacity of the panel.
