Abstract: A pushbutton and an electrical switch can be linked to one another so that movement of the pushbutton, for example by a user depressing the pushbutton, can control the switch. The switch can be in a closed position prior to being depressed and in an open position afterwards, or vice versa. A photodetector can be located on the switch side of the pushbutton. The pushbutton can be formed of a material that transmits light so that light can pass through the pushbutton for receipt by the photodetector. The pushbutton can additionally or alternatively be formed with an opening that is sized to receive an object inserted by a user. Insertion of the object can manipulate a second electrical switch, which may control flow of electricity from a battery, for example.

Abstract: Techniques for detecting an inrush current in a power transformer in are disclosed. For example, the presence of an inrush current on a current path in a power transformer may be determined by receiving a signal from a Rogowski coil positioned on a current path of a power transformer, the signal corresponding to a current flowing in the current path; sampling the received signal to produce samples of the received signal; and analyzing the samples of the received signal relative to at least two criteria to determine whether an inrush current is present. When an inrush current is present, operation of a protective relay is blocked.

Abstract: A lighting system or luminaire can comprise two environmentally sealed housings. One of the housings can house one or more light emitting diodes. The other housing can house a driver for supplying electricity to the light emitting diode or diodes. The housings can be nested together. For example, one of the housings can extend partially into a cavity of the other housing. A portion of the cavity can remain unfilled when the housings are nested, to provide an air gap between the two housings. The air gap can be environmentally exposed, for example exposed to moisture when the lighting system is mounted outdoors.

For example, a sensing system of a vacuum interrupter includes a sensor including a material that oxidizes in the presence of air and is at least partially positioned in an evacuated space of a vacuum interrupter, the sensor being configured to produce an indication of impedance of the material; and a control system coupled to the sensor, the control system including an electronic processor and an electronic storage that stores instructions that, when executed, cause the electronic processor to access an indication of impedance produced by the sensor, determine a measure of impedance of the material of the sensor based on the accessed indication of impedance, and determine a condition of the evacuated space based on the determined measure of impedance.
