Abstract: Methods for dehazing a digital image and for restoring an underwater digital image. The methods include the following steps: First, clustering pixels of a digital image into haze-lines, wherein each of the haze-lines is comprised of a sub-group of the pixels that are scattered non-locally over the digital image. Second, estimating, based on the haze-lines, a transmission map of the digital image, wherein the transmission map encodes scene depth information for each pixel of the digital image. Then, for a hazy image, calculating a dehazed digital image based on the transmission map.

Abstract: A composition-of-matter is described herein, comprising a first layer and third layer separated by a second layer. The first and third layers each comprise a thermoplastic polymer and a substance capable of reversibly releasing lithium or a delithiated form of the substance. The second layer comprises a thermoplastic polymer and is capable of conducting lithium ions. Further described herein is an electrochemical system comprising the composition-of-matter, wherein the first and third layers are each a lithium-based electrode, and batteries and supercapacitors comprising such an electrochemical system, as well as methods for preparing the composition-of-matter or the electrochemical system.

Abstract: In a system for converting digital data into a modulated optical signal, an electrically controllable device, including a modulator having one or more actuating electrodes, provides an analog-modulated optical signal that is modulated in response to output data bits of a digital-to-digital mapping. A digital-to-digital conversion provides the mapping of input data words to the output data bits. The mapping enables adjustments to correct for non-linearities and other undesirable characteristics, thereby improving signal quality.

Abstract: A method for transmitting information includes deriving a transfer function that relates a first image formed over a first area on an end face (38) of a multimode optical fiber (40) and a second image formed over a second area extending over a side (42) of the multimode optical fiber. Optical information is input to the multimode optical fiber through one of the first and second areas.
