摘要: An apparatus for generating a time-delayed product of two independent signals includes a fixed-wavelength laser. A first optical modulator is optically coupled to the fixed-wavelength laser and configured to modulate a fixed wavelength optical carrier with a first input signal of a set of input signals. The apparatus also includes a tunable laser. A second optical modulator is optically coupled to the tunable laser and configured to modulate a tunable optical carrier with a second input signal of the set of input signals. The apparatus also includes a dispersive element coupled to the second optical modulator, a first optical detector coupled to the dispersive element, a third optical modulator optically coupled to the first optical detector and the first optical modulator, an optical 90-degree hybrid element optically coupled to the third optical modulator, and a plurality of optical detectors optically coupled to the optical 90-degree hybrid element.

摘要: In a system for converting digital data into a modulated optical signal, an electrically controllable device, including a modulator having one or more actuating electrodes, provides an analog-modulated optical signal that is modulated in response to output data bits of a digital-to-digital mapping. A digital-to-digital conversion provides the mapping of input data words to the output data bits. The mapping enables adjustments to correct for non-linearities and other undesirable characteristics, thereby improving signal quality.

摘要: Embodiments of a tunable radio frequency (RF) diplexer and methods of duplexing transmission and receive signals are disclosed. In one embodiment, the RF diplexer includes a first hybrid coupler, a second hybrid coupler, and an RF filter circuit, and a phase inversion component. Both the RF filter circuit and the phase inversion component are connected between the first hybrid coupler and the second hybrid coupler. In some embodiments, the phase inversion component is provided by the RF filter circuit, while in other embodiments, the phase inversion component is provided separately. The phase inversion component is configured to provide a differential phase shift. The benefit of introducing the differential phase shift is that it provides increased isolation and broadband isolation between the different frequency bands being diplexed by the RF diplexer.

摘要: A method for creating an optical binary digital transmit signal to be supplied to an optical transmission link including: operating an optical transmitter in such a state that mode hopping occurs between a predefined first and a predefined second optical mode of the optical transmitter if a binary digital modulation signal is supplied to the optical transmitter and creating a modulated optical output signal of the optical transmitter corresponding to the binary digital modulation signal supplied to the optical transmitter. The modulated optical output signal is optically filtered in such a way that at least a portion of the optical power spectrum of the modulated optical output signal caused by a selected one of the first and second optical modes is suppressed or at least substantially attenuated.

摘要: A system for converting digital data into a modulated optical signal, comprises an electrically controllable device having M actuating electrodes. The device provides an optical signal that is modulated in response to binary voltages applied to the actuating electrodes. The system also comprises a digital-to-digital converter that provides a mapping of input data words to binary actuation vectors of M bits and supplies the binary actuation vectors as M bits of binary actuation voltages to the M actuating electrodes, where M is larger than the number of bits in each input data word. The digital-to-digital converter is enabled to map each digital input data word to a binary actuation vector by selecting a binary actuation vector from a subset of binary actuation vectors available to represent each of the input data words.

摘要: An aspect of the present invention is an optical modulator, comprising a waveguide substrate and a multiplexing optical system. The waveguide substrate includes a first modulation portion, a second modulation, a first optical path and a second optical path. The multiplexing optical system includes a first surface and a second surface. First output light output from the first optical path and second output light output from the second optical path are input from the first surface and are output after there are combined at a combining point of the second surface. An optical path length between the first surface and the combining point in the first output light is larger than that of in the second output light. An optical path length between the first modulation portion and the first surface and an optical path length between the second modulation portion and the first surface are different.

摘要: To enable signal position detection, frequency offset compensation, clock offset compensation, and chromatic dispersion amount estimation in a communication system based on coherent detection using an optical signal, even on a signal having a great offset in an arrival time depending on a frequency due to chromatic dispersion. An optical signal transmitting apparatus generates specific frequency band signals having power concentrated on two or more specific frequencies and transmits a signal including the specific frequency band signals. An optical signal receiving apparatus converts a received signal into a digital signal, detects positions of the specific frequency band signals from the converted digital signal, estimates frequency positions of the detected specific frequency band signals, and detects a frequency offset between an optical signal receiving apparatus and an optical signal transmitting apparatus. Moreover, the optical signal receiving apparatus detects a clock offset between the optical signal receiving apparatus and the optical signal transmitting apparatus from an interval between the estimated frequency positions of the specific frequency band signals. Furthermore, the optical signal receiving apparatus estimates temporal positions of the detected specific frequency band signals and detects a chromatic dispersion amount from a difference between the temporal positions of the specific frequency band signals corresponding to different frequencies.

摘要: A differential TWE MZM includes a differential driver, first and second capacitors, and first and second terminations. The differential driver includes a first differential output and a second differential output that collectively form a differential pair. The first differential output is DC coupled to a first arm optical phase shifter of a TWE MZM. The second differential output is DC coupled to a second arm optical phase shifter of the TWE MZM. The first capacitor AC couples the second differential output to the first arm optical phase shifter. The second capacitor AC couples the first differential output to the second arm optical phase shifter. The first and second terminations are coupled to, respectively, the first or second arm optical phase shifter.
