Abstract:
An electronic device may have a housing formed from a rigid material such as metal or fiber-composite material. A display such as an organic light-emitting diode display may be attached to a planar wall portion of the housing using a layer of adhesive. A display cover layer may be attached to the organic light-emitting diode with a layer of adhesive. The adhesive layers may be rigid to enhance device stiffness. The housing may have curved sidewall portions that extend outwardly from the planar wall portion to enhance stiffness. The organic light-emitting diode display may have an array of pixels formed from thin-film transistor circuitry. The thin-film transistor circuitry may be formed on a substrate such as a glass substrate that is attached to the planar wall portion. The organic light-emitting diode display may have a circular polarizer that is attached to the thin-film transistor circuitry.
Abstract:
An electronic device including a frame member suitable for use with an audio driver is disclosed. The frame member may include a recessed region that receives the audio driver. The frame member may further include a flange member surrounding the recessed region. The frame member may be formed from a material having a relatively high coefficient of thermal conductivity. Accordingly, the frame member can dissipate thermal energy (heat) generated from the audio driver. In addition, the frame member may be seated in an enclosure of an electronic device in a manner that allows the frame member to pass the thermal energy to the enclosure. Also, the frame member may include a ferromagnetic material, which may cause the frame member to direct magnetic flux from a magnet of the audio driver in a desired manner.
Abstract:
A removable assembly for quickly inserting and removing a mass storage device from a compartment situated on the case of a portable computing device is described. The removable assembly is made of a mass storage device, a bracket which serves as a carrier for the mass storage device, and a metal plate. In some embodiments, the mass storage device is a solid state drive (SSD) card. The bracket is a single-piece plastic structure that is deflected for snap insertion into the compartment and snap removal from the compartment. The metal plate conducts heat from the solid state drive (SSD) card to prevent the SSD from overheating.
Abstract:
Embodiments of keyboards having variations of electrically connecting keys to an internal component of an electronic device are described. Some embodiments include positioning several rows of conductive layers below several rows of keys. The conductive layers may be configured to receive a signal indicating a key has been depressed. Also, the internal component may be configured to scan the conductive layers to determine whether a key or keys have been depressed. In some embodiments, the conductive layers lie outside a portion of the electronic device in which internal components are traditionally located. In some embodiments, a substrate may be integrally connected with the keyboard. The substrate may receive some internal components of the electronic device.
Abstract:
One or more floating fastener assemblies used to fasten components together are described. In some embodiments, the components are top and bottom portions of an enclosure of a computing device. Each floating fastener assembly can include a fastener having at least one surface that can engage with a surface of the enclosure to limit the rotation of the fastener during fastening. Each floating fastener can also include a clearance area for the fastener to “float” in a lateral direction with respect to the enclosure. Thus, when corresponding openings in the top and bottom portions of the enclosure are not exactly aligned, each fastener can shift laterally to allow screws to engage to fasten the top and bottom portions together.
Abstract:
A configurable, force-sensitive input structure for an electronic device is disclosed. The input structure has a metal contact layer, a sense layer positioned below the metal contact layer, and a drive layer capacitively coupled to the sense layer. The input structure may also have a compliant layer positioned between and coupled to the sense layer and the drive layer, a rigid base layer positioned below the drive layer, and a set of supports positioned between the metal contact layer and the rigid base layer.

Abstract:
A portable computer includes a display portion comprising a display and a base portion pivotally coupled to the display portion. The base portion may include a bottom case and a top case, formed from a dielectric material, coupled to the bottom case. The top case may include a top member defining a top surface of the base portion and a sidewall integrally formed with the top member and defining a side surface of the base portion. The portable computer may also include a sensing system including a first sensing system configured to determine a location of a touch input applied to the top surface of the base portion and a second sensing system configured to determine a force of the touch input.
Abstract:
