摘要: An adaptive antenna array 104 is disclosed. The adaptive antenna array 104 includes a plurality of reflector elements 202 and an array control processor 208 that regulates several resolvers 209, 210, 211 to generate independent magnetic fields. The array control processor 208 also generates reflector element command and control information and transmits the command and control information with a transmitter 218 to the reflector elements 202. The reflector elements 202 include a detector 706 that detects the transmitted command and control information. The reflector elements 202 further include a signal reflector 308 that reflect incident RF energy, a magnetic transceiver 310, and a reflector element controller 314. The reflector element controller 314 is connected to the detector 706 and interprets the command and control information 402. The reflector element controller 314 is also connected to the magnetic transceiver 310 and senses interactions between the independent magnetic fields and the magnetic transceiver 310. In response to the command and control information 402, the reflector element controller 314 generates a control field 908 in the magnetic transceiver 310 that interacts with the independent magnetic fields and motivates the reflector element 202 to the pitch and position in the command and control information 402.

摘要: A modular solid-state mass data storage device providing high-density, high capacity storage of numerous full-length movies for video server applications. The mass data storage device employs a modular pipeline architecture in which a distributed array of controller/memory modules is arranged in parallel controller/memory channels on one or more controller/memory cards. The modular pipeline architecture, in which each controller/memory channel has multiple controller/memory modules connected in a serial chain by address, data and control buses, allows the number of controller/memory modules in each channel and the number of controller/memory channels to be selected to accommodate a desired storage size and transfer rate, without an undesirably high latency time. An asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch allows multiple viewers to access the movies stored in the mass data storage device with independent video cassette recorder (VCR)-like control of the movie being watched. In a disclosed embodiment, the controller/memory modules in each channel are connected to first and second buses which extend from a data format module, the first bus also extending from the last controller/memory modules in each channel back to the data format module. The data format module provides data formatting, synchronization and error correction for the stored movies. In the disclosed embodiment, each controller/memory module includes an array of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, and multiple controller/memory modules are packaged in standard memory module packages, such as single in-line memory module (SIMM) packages.

摘要: Method and apparatus for converting an analog pulse-width signal into a digital signal through the transmission of the analog signal through a delay loop. The resulting delayed signal is then combined with the original signal in an OR gate providing an output of the combined signals. If the width of the original signal is greater than the delay loop a bit 1 is output for the digital signal and the resulting signal from the OR gate is transmitted to the next stage. If the width of the analog signal is less than or equal to the delay loop a bit of 0 is transmitted as the digital signal and the delayed signal is transmitted to the next stage unchanged.

摘要: A signal equalizer that employs micro-electromechanical machine devices for the tap weight controllers. The equalizer includes a substrate on which is formed a forward transmission line rail and a return transmission line rail. A cantilever stanchion is also formed on the substrate that runs parallel with the transmission line rails. A series of spaced apart cantilevers are pivotally mounted to the cantilever stanchion, and extend over the transmission line rails to define a gap therebetween. A weight tap line is coupled to each cantilever, and is responsive to a DC weight signal that controls the position of the cantilever to set the gap between the cantilever and the transmission line rails. A distorted signal is coupled from the forward transmission line rail to the return transmission line rail through the cantilevers.

摘要: The present invention provides systems and methods that employ a continuously variable optical delay line to introduce a delay into a transmitted optical signal. The delay line comprises a holey fiber configured in a spiral layout, wherein one end of the fiber is operative to a reflective fluid reservoir and the other end in operative to an input port. A segmented piezoelectric actuator is employed to position a reflective fluid within the fiber, utilizing a commutated technique that continuously moves the fluid. A signal received at the input port is routed through the holey fiber at an angle of incidence to achieve total internal reflection. The signal traverses towards the reflective fluid, and reflects back towards the input port after coming into contact with the fluid's surface. The delay introduced into the signal is a function of the distance traveled through the delay line.

摘要: A configurable circuit array that includes a matrix of cells, where each cell includes interconnected analog and/or digital circuit elements. The cells are fabricated on a common semiconductor substrate, and are electrically isolated from each other. The circuit elements in the cells are electrically coupled to circuit elements in other cells, and are electrically coupled to bonding pads by coaxial transmission lines capable of transmitting extremely high frequency signals. The transmission lines include a center conductor and first and second shield conductors, where the shield conductors prevent cross-talk interference. The transmission lines extend vertically from the substrate until they are a suitable distances above the circuit elements in the cell. From there, the transmission lines extend horizontally relative to the substrate to the opposite end connection point, where they again extend vertically down to the substrate.

摘要: A free space point-to-multipoint optical transceiver has a reflective element and an optical feed mounted on the reflective element. When the optical feed is coupled to a light source, the optical feed is positionable to direct light received from the light source onto a reflective surface of the reflective element. Light directed onto the reflective surface is reflected towards a remote location to be received by a receiver located at the remote location. By adjusting a position of the optical feed, the reflected light is aimed. Therefore, adjusting the position of the optical feed provides a technique to track moving remote locations and/or to target different remote locations.

摘要: A receiver (10) for a wireless telecommunications system that provides relatively wideband signal processing of received signals without increased signal distortion so that multiple received signals can be simultaneously processed. The receiver (10) includes a specialized LNA (16), frequency down-converter (18) and ADC (20) to perform the wideband signal processing while maintaining receiver performance. The frequency down-converter (18) employs a suitable mixer (28), BPA (32), attenuator (34), and transformer (36) that are tuned to provide the desired frequency down-conversion and amplitude control over the desired wideband. The down-converter devices are selected depending on the particular performance criteria of the ADC (20). A specialized digital channelizer (22) is included in the receiver (10) that receives the digital signal from the ADC (20), and separates the signals into the multiple channels. In one embodiment, the frequency down-conversion is performed in a single down-conversion process, and the ADC (20) employs delta-sigma processing to provide digital conversion over the complete frequency band. In an alternate embodiment, the frequency down-conversion is performed in a double down-conversion process so that a less complex ADC (62) can be used.

摘要: An optical analog-to-digital converter (10) that makes use of a downward-folding successive approximation conversion scheme that employs subtraction of optical signals. A pulsed optical signal (20) to be converted is applied as an input to each of a plurality of converter channels (12, 14, 16, 18), where each channel (12, 14, 16, 18) outputs one of the bits of the digital output of the converter (10). The input signal (20) to each channel (12, 14, 16, 18) is sent to a thresholding device (24, 40, 60, 80) that determines whether the intensity of the signal is greater than or less than a predetermined threshold value. The first channel thresholding device (24) compares the input signal (20) to a threshold value that is one-half of a known maximum intensity. Subsequent channel thresholding devices (40, 60, 80) compare the input signal to a threshold value that is one-half of the intensity used in the previous channel in a downward-folding scheme. If the intensity of the input signal (20) is greater than the threshold value in a particular channel (12, 14, 16, 18), then that threshold value is subtracted from the input signal (20) in each of the successive channels before being applied to the thresholding device (40, 60, 80) in that channel (14, 16, 18). The subtraction elements (38, 56, 58, 74, 76, 78) can be saturable absorbers or electro-absorption modules in a particular design. Additionally, the control signals from a particular channel (12, 14, 16, 18) to each of the successive channels to determine whether subtraction will occur can be provided by an optically controlled switch (30, 46, 66), such as a saturable absorber, or an electrically controlled switch, such as an electro-absorption module.
