    Abstract: A fuel oil composition comprising a fuel oil and 0.1 to 10,000 ppm of a polymeric condensation product which is formed by the reaction of an aliphatic aldehyde or ketone, or a reactive equivalent, with either (i) a straight or branched chain C1-C7 alkyl ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, or with (ii) a branched chain C8-C16 alkyl ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, or with (iii) a mixture of long chain C8-C18 alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid, at least one of said alkyls being branched. The polymeric condensation product improves the cold flow characteristics of the fuel oil.

    Abstract: Sugars and partly protected sugar derivatives are chlorinated by reaction of unprotected hydroxyl groups with thionyl chloride to form a persulphite followed by decomposition of the sulphite groups to form chlorosulphites, displacement of the chlorosulphite groups and insertion of chlorine atoms at one or more positions, characterised in that formation and displacement of the chlorosulphite groups and insertion of chlorine atoms is effected by reaction with thionyl chloride in an inert solvent in the presence of a quaternary salt of the general formula:N.sup.+ R.sup.1 R.sup.2 R.sup.3 R.sup.4 Cl.sup.- (I)wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, which may be the same or different, each represent a lower alkyl group, and R.sup.4 represents a hydrocarbon group with at least seven carbon atoms; and, when the sugar or partly protected sugar derivative has more than three unprotected hydroxyl groups, the process comprises the following stages:(a) reaction of the sugar or partly protected sugar derivative with thionyl chloride in the presence of pyridine to form a persulphite;(b) isolation of the polysulphite to remove free pyridine; and(c) reaction of the isolated polysulphite with thionyl chloride in an inert solvent or suspension medium in the presence of a quaternary salt of the general formula (I).

    Abstract: The invention relates to compositions and methods for prion degradation, decontamination or disinfection. The composition comprises an oxidizing agent, one or more proteases and a surfactant such as an ionic surfactant/detergent. The method comprises contacting a prion contaminated entity with a prion-degrading composition comprising an effective amount of an oxidizing agent, an effective amount of at least one protease, and an effective amount of a surfactant. The components of the composition may be contacted with a prion-contaminated entity sequentially or simultaneously using an aqueous composition. Typically at least two different proteases are used for optimal efficacy. Preferably the oxidizing agent comprises peracetyl ions or a source thereof. The invention also relates to kits comprising the various reagents.
