    Abstract: A method for improved traffic congestion estimation is provided using signal phase and timing data from traffic signals at intersections and probe data from vehicles traversing said intersections. An example method may include: identifying each of a plurality of paths through an intersection; identifying signal phase and timing data for each traffic light associated with each path through the intersection; receiving probe data for vehicles approaching or traversing the intersection; estimating a number of vehicles failing to traverse the intersection along a path through the intersection; estimating a congestion status of the path through the intersection based on the number of vehicles failing to traverse the intersection; and causing the congestion status to be provided to permit updating of a map to reflect the congestion status.

    Abstract: A method is provided for identifying and indexing lanes of an intersection. Methods may include: determining a directionality for one or more lanes for each of two or more roadways proximate an intersection, where directionality is one of toward the intersection or away from the intersection; determining a bearing for each lane of the two or more roadways proximate the intersection, where the bearing includes a compass heading informed by the directionality; determining a lane position for each lane of the two or more roadways proximate the intersection; generating an order of the lanes using a hierarchy, where the hierarchy considers directionality first, bearing second, and lane position third; causing the generated order of the lanes to be stored in a memory, where the order of the lanes is associated with the intersection; and managing signal phase and timing of the intersection using the generated order of the lanes.

    Abstract: A method is provided to generate vehicle lane speed patterns. A method may include: receiving probe data from a plurality of probes, where the probe data includes probe data point location and heading; matching probe data points to a road segment to generate map-matched probe data points; analyzing the probe data relative to the road segment to establish a multi-modal distribution of probe data representing a distance of the probe data points from a pre-defined reference position of the road segment; matching the analyzed probe data points to individual lanes of the road segment, where peaks in the established multi-modal distribution are associated with individual lanes; and generating a vehicle lane speed pattern for each lane of the road segment based on a speed associated with probe data that is map-matched to the individual lanes.

    Abstract: A method including retrieving a multi-dimensional map from a navigation system memory; determining an aerial route between two locations based at least partially upon the multi-dimensional map; and storing the aerial route in the navigation system memory. The multi-dimensional map includes terrain information and object information. The object information includes information regarding location and size of objects extending above ground level. The objects are in uncontrolled airspace, and the object information includes height information regarding a height above ground level of at least some of the objects. The aerial route is limited to the uncontrolled airspace, where the aerial route is over and around at least some of the objects, and where the aerial route is determined, at least partially, based upon the height information of the objects.

    Abstract: In the example embodiments as described herein there is at least a method and apparatus to perform operations including monitoring probe data of car and truck traffic on at least one road segment including more than one lane; based on the monitoring, determining that an occurrence of a traffic jam ahead of the car and truck traffic on the at least one road segment is probable or occurring; and in response to the determining, selectively notifying at least one of a car and truck of the traffic of required or prohibited changes to at least one of their position and speed on the at least one road segment to prevent an occurrence of a traffic jam on the at least one road segment.
