Abstract:
The present invention is directed to methods to produce, process, and exploit nanomaterials, and particularly elongated nanowire materials. The invention provides a method for producing nanowires that includes providing a thin film of a catalyst material with varying thickness on a substrate, heating the substrate and thin film, such that the thin film disassociates at the relatively thinner regions and vapor depositing a semiconductor onto the substrate to produce nanowires. A method is also provided in which two or more thin films of different materials are overlayed over a substrate, selectively etching the first underlying thin film to create a plurality of islands of the second thin film that mask portions of the first thin film and expose other portions and growing nanowires on the first thin film. Additional methods for producing nanowires are provided.
Abstract:
A system and method for designing a fibrous non-woven mat production, where the method includes selecting various physical characteristics for at least some of the components to be included in the mat, obtaining empirical performance data relating to the mat based on the selected physical properties, developing a prediction equation for a performance characteristic of the mat based on the empirical data and the physical characteristics, calculating performance characteristics using the prediction equation, where ranges of at least some of the physical characteristics are used in the prediction equation, and selecting components for the mat based on the calculated performance characteristics.
Abstract:
A self-propelled overhead track-mounted moving system includes an elongated support rail attachable to an overhead support structure, a carrier trolley mounted for undergoing movement along the support rail, an actuation unit supported on the support rail and on one side of the trolley, and a drive unit mounted on an opposite side of the trolley and coupled to the actuation unit. The support rail has a pair of top guide tracks and a bottom guide track. The trolley includes a housing having a pair of opposite lateral sides and a pair of front and rear ends. The trolley also includes front and rear pairs of roller wheels rotatably mounted to front and rear ends of an upper portion of the housing and supported upon the top guide tracks of the support rail and an object hanger attached to a lower portion of the housing and being disposed in a substantially centered position on the housing between the front and rear pairs of roller wheels to provide a substantially uniform distribution of the weight of a suspended object over all of the wheels. The drive unit includes a power source and a drive wheel coupled therewith and engaged with the bottom guide track of the support rail for drivingly causing movement of the carrier trolley therealong upon operation of the drive unit by the actuation unit.
Abstract:
A method for measuring motion from biological imaging data including collecting non-carrier data images; patterning the non-carrier data images with synthetic carrier properties; and processing the patterned non-carrier data images with a carrier based motion tracking technique to generate images representing motion measurements. The method preferably converts images lacking a carrier signal to ones with a synthetic carrier signal such that highly accurate and robust speckle tracking can be achieved.
Abstract:
A carving pin, a method for using the carving pin to carve a cooked roast, and a system for carving a cooked roast comprising the carving pin are provided. The carving pin comprises a base and a spike member connected to the base at about a 90° angle at about the center of the base, protruding upwards from the base. The spike member comprises a spike member end and a spike member body, the spike member end being sharp (i.e., tapered such that the very top is the sharpest) and being located distal to the base, the spike member end being connected continuously to the spike member body (i.e., all in one piece). The spike member end is adapted to pierce the cooked roast such that the cooked roast traverses the spike member and rests on the base.
Abstract:
Solvents for macromolecules generally believed to be insoluble in their pristine form are identified by generation of a ‘solvent resonance’ in the relationship between solvent quality (deduced by Rayleigh scattering) and an intrinsic property of solvents. A local extreme of the solvent resonance identifies the ideal intrinsic property of an ideal solvent which may then be used to select a particular solvent or solvent combination. A solvent for graphene is used in the production of transparent conductive electrodes.
Abstract:
A system and method for transforming ultrasound data includes acquiring ultrasound data, calculating object motion from the data, modifying a processing parameter, processing the ultrasound data according to the processing parameter, and outputting the processed ultrasound data. The system and method may additionally include the calculation of a data quality metric that can additionally or alternatively be used with object motion to modify a processing parameter.
