A resin composition comprising a polyphenylene ether and a flame retardant, wherein said polyphenylene ether is obtained by polymerizing a monomer comprising 100 parts by weight of 2,6-dimethylphenol and 0.5 to 7.5 parts by weight of ortho cresol in the presence of a catalyst and an oxygen-containing gas, especially that having a molecular weight distribution of 2.8 to 8.0.. The resin composition is excellent in flame retardancy, particularly in anti-dripping properties in burning. The resin composition thereof is applicable not only in the electric and electronic fields which require high flame retardancy, but also to other various fields needing polyphenylene ether resins.

The sputtering target is capable of forming at high speed a film that contains SiO2 as the main component and has a low refractive index. The sputtering target can be produced by a process in which a molded product of SiC is impregnated with molten Si.

A process for producing a polyphenylene ether, which comprises contacting, with an aqueous solution of a chelating agent, a polyphenylene ether solution and adding a water-soluble poor solvent for the polyphenylene ether to precipitate the polyphenylene ether; and recovering the thus precipitated polyphenylene ether. A mixture remaining after the recovery of the polyphenylene ether is brought into contact with water to extract the water-soluble poor solvent, and a water phase containing the thus extracted water-soluble poor solvent is recovered by separation. The water-soluble poor solvent is separated and removed from the water phase by distillation, and the whole or a part of the remaining water phase is recycled as water to be brought into contact with the mixture, the remaining water phase having a content of a high-boiling-point organic substance of 1 wt. % or less.

Disclosed are: a high-performance polyphenylene ether-organoclay complex which is significantly improved in fire retardancy, durability (e.g., light resistance, chemical resistance, impact resistance), an ability of being extruded into a sheet and the like; and others. The polyphenylene ether-organoclay complex can be produced by: preparing a mixture comprising a solvent, a catalyst, a phenolic compound and an organoclay, wherein the organoclay is contained in an amount of 0.1 to 20 parts by mass relative to 100 parts by mass of the phenolic compound; contacting the mixture with an oxygen-containing gas to cause the oxidative polymerization of the phenolic compound; and removing the solvent and the catalyst from the resulting polymerization mixture. This method is applicable to the production of a complex of an organoclay with other polymers such as an aromatic polycarbonate, a polyether imide and a polyacrylate.
