Abstract: Photosensitive cardiac rhythm modulation structures and systems are described. A genetically-engineered tissue comprising a population of pacing cells expressing a photosensitive membrane transport mechanism that is responsive to light of a particular wavelength(s) combined with one or more of a light source, a power generator, and a sensor provides pacemaker and/or defibrillator function to a subject. The systems further provide in vitro model systems for electrophysiological studies.

Abstract: Methods of evaluating functional activity of an engineered three-dimensional tissue, methods of identifying a compound that modulates tissue function, and methods for identifying a compounds that is useful for treating or preventing a disease affecting tissue function are provided herein. Some methods include providing or obtaining a three-dimensional tissue scaffold defining a lumen or a cavity, the tissue scaffold comprising one or more polymeric fibers each having a micron-scale or nanometer-scale diameter, at least some of the one or more polymeric fibers encircling the lumen or cavity at a helical angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the lumen or cavity, at an azimuthal orientation with respect to the longitudinal axis of the lumen or cavity, or at both.

Abstract: Systems and methods for focused direction deposition of a micron or nanometer dimension polymeric fiber and materials of such fibers are described herein. Systems and methods employ one or more gas flows to entrain and deflect fibers produced by a rotary jet spinning system forming a focused fiber stream. Some embodiments enable control of alignment and distribution of the fibers with a relatively high fiber throughput.

Abstract: System, devices and methods for the fabrication of polymeric fibers, as well as resulting polymeric fibers, polymeric fiber materials and uses thereof are described. The polymeric fibers include poly(para-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) fibers having an average fiber diameter in a range of 300 nm to 3 μm, and having an average Young's modulus in a range of 1 GPa to 100 GPa. Some materials including a plurality of the polymeric fibers have a thermal conductivity (k) in a range of 0.005 W/(m·K) to 10 W/(m·K) as measured perpendicular to a plane of the material.
