A combustion control system for a spark-ignition internal combustion engine includes a variable piston stroke characteristic mechanism changing a compression ratio of the engine, sensors detecting engine operating conditions, i.e., engine speed and engine load, and at least one of a variable lift and working angle control mechanism simultaneously continuously changing an intake-valve lift and an intake-valve working angle and a variable phase control mechanism changing an angular phase at a central angle corresponding to a maximum valve lift point of the intake valve. Also provided is a control unit that controls the variable piston stroke characteristic mechanism, and at least one of the variable lift and working angle control mechanism and the variable phase control mechanism, depending on the engine operating conditions.

A control system for an internal combustion engine is provided. The engine includes a compression ratio control mechanism and an ignition timing control system. The control system comprises an engine control for controlling the compression ratio control mechanism and the ignition timing control system so that the compression ratio is varied depending upon variations of engine rpm, engine load and a warm-up condition of the engine and that when the engine is cold, the ignition timing is retarded from a MBT point and a top dead center position of a piston is made lower in level than that obtained when the engine is hot and operated at corresponding engine rpm and engine load. A method for controlling such an internal combustion engine is also provided.

An internal combustion engine comprises a variable valve control device that varies a lift degree of an intake valve, an air intake passage led to an intake port of the engine that is incorporated with the intake valve and a fuel injection valve arranged to inject fuel into the intake port. The fuel injection valve has a first injection mode wherein each fuel injection shot is entirely carried out during opening period of the intake valve and a second injection mode wherein each fuel injection shot entirely finishes prior to opening action of the intake valve. A control unit is further employed by the engine, which allows the fuel injection valve to select one of the first and second injection modes in accordance with the lift degree of intake valve effected by the variable valve control device.

In an engine employing a variable lift and working angle control mechanism enabling both a valve lift and a working angle of an intake valve to be continuously simultaneously varied depending on engine operating conditions, the control mechanism includes at least a rocker arm and a control shaft formed integral with an eccentric cam. The valve lift characteristic of the control mechanism varies by changing an angular position of the control shaft. A control-shaft position sensor has a directivity for the sensor output error occurring owing to a change in relative position between the control shaft center and the position sensor. The error becomes a minimum value in a specified direction of relative position change. The specified direction of relative position change is set to be substantially identical to a direction of a line of action of load acting on the center of the control shaft during idling.

The crankshaft moves the piston within an engine cylinder. The control shaft has an eccentric axle eccentric relative to its center-axis. The linkage operatively connects the piston to the crankshaft and the crankshaft to the eccentric axle of the control shaft. The motor rotates the control shaft so a top-dead-center position of the piston changes to vary compression ratios by changing the positions of the eccentric axle and the linkage. The reduction mechanism couples the motor to the control shaft to transmit a reduced rotation of the motor to the control shaft so a reduction ratio of a rotation angle of the motor to a rotation angle of the control shaft is less at high-compression ratios than at intermediate compression ratios.
