Downstream of the second painting station(s) the article is brushed or rolled to impart texture to the second coat of paint, which differs in some respect from the first coat applied in the first station. A method of painting a substrate coated with an electrocoat, wherein the electrocoat includes an average surface roughness equal to or greater than 3 microns, includes applying a two-component sealer onto the electrocoat to form a film having a thickness of from 5 microns to 20 microns. The two-component sealer is partially cured by application of heat to a gel content of from 10 to 50 wt. %. Thereafter, a topcoat, typically including a basecoat and a clearcoat, is applied onto the two-component sealer. Both the two-component sealer and the topcoat are completely cured by application of heat.

The present invention is a method for applying a high emissivity graphite powder coating to a variety of various substrates. The method employs a mixture consisting substantially of 75 % of a solution of colloidal carbon in isopropanol and 25 % of butyl alcohol as a bonding agent. First, a first layer of the mixture is applied to a surface of the substrate. After the surface of the substrate dries, a second layer of the mixture is applied to the surface of the substrate. Then a layer of a graphite powder is applied to the substrate over the second layer of the mixture while it is still wet. The method provides the surface of the substrate with high emissivity (&egr;>0.9) and low reflectance characteristics that may be exposed to high temperatures.

The invention relates to a process for the production of two-coat finishes, in which a pigmented basecoat is first applied, the resulting basecoat film is coated with a powder clearcoat, and basecoat and clearcoat are subsequently baked together. In accordance with the invention, the powder clearcoat employed is a powder coating which contains an epoxide group-containing polyacrylate resin as binder and a mixture of (A) a polyanhydride and (B) a carboxyl group-containing polyester resin as crosslinking agent. The polyester resin can be prepared by reacting a diol (b1), a compound (b2) which contains per molecule at least three functional groups selected from hydroxyl, primary amino, secondary amino, carboxyl and acid anhydride groups, and (b3) a dicarboxylic acid in a molar ratio of (b1): (b2): (b3)=0.0 to 3.0: 1.0: 1.5 to 9.0 to give a polyester resin having an acid value of 40 to 300.
