A method for repairing run-in coatings is provided. The method includes the steps of filling a damaged site of the run-in coating with a filling material having a material composition that corresponds to a material composition of the run-in coating or is comparable to the material composition of the run-in coating or having material properties that are comparable to material properties of the run-in coating; drying the filling material that has been filled into the damaged site; depositing a donor diffusion layer over an area of the damaged site and onto the dried filling material; and thermally treating the run-in coating at least in the area of the damaged site to locally diffuse at least one metallic element from the donor diffusion layer into the filling material.

A coating fluid comprising a boron compound, an organic binder, a silicon compound, an alumina precursor, and water and/or an organic solvent is used to diffuse boron into a silicon substrate to form a p-type diffusion layer. The coating fluid is spin coated onto the substrate to form a uniform coating having a sufficient amount of impurity whereupon a p-type diffusion layer having in-plane uniformity is formed.

The method is particularly suited for the removal of adherent particles that form as a result of oxidation of a metallic powder used as an aluminum source during slurry aluminiding processes, wherein the adherent particles become attached by sintering to the aluminized surface. The process includes contacting the aluminized surface with an aqueous caustic hydroxide solution until the particles are removed therefrom.

The oxidation and corrosion resistance of a nickel-base alloy are enhanced by a process which includes first enriching the surface of an alloy substrate with platinum, as by electrolytic deposition, and then simultaneously diffusing aluminum and silicon from a molten state into the platinum-enriched substrate. A method of producing multicomponent diffusion coatings on metal articles mprises the steps of separately dissolving in a transport melt the alloying elements at temperature T equalling 0.5 to 0.8 of their respective melting points, and saturating with these alloying elements by diffusion the surface of a metal article at temperature T.sub.1 equalling 0.3 to 0.5 of the melting point of the material of this article, with the difference T-T.sub.1 being at least 50.degree. C. To perform this method, the apparatus comprises a central chamber for accommodating the transport melt and the metal article to be coated, and two (in one embodiment) peripheral chambers for accommodating the transport melt and the respective individual alloying elements, communicating via ducts. All the chambers and ducts have heating elements arranged thereon.
