A high-density recording media comprising longitudinally oriented polycrystalline barium ferrite exhibits large coercivity, corrosion resistance, high hardness and durability. Films are prepared by on-axis sputtering at ambient temperatures from stoichiometric targets followed by a post-deposition anneal at approximately 850.degree.C. to induce crystallization. Crystallization yields a magnetic film with large in-plane remanence and a fine scale texturing that greatly improves the tribological performance of barium ferrite disks. Exceptional durability can be achieved on disks without overcoats. Grain sizes as small as 200 .ANG. are produced by doping with small amounts of Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 or other additives. Coercivities greater than 4000 Oe are achieved even in small grain films.

To improve the sliding characteristics of a magnetic head by reducing a friction coefficient, and realize a magnetic recording medium with a high recording density and a large capacity, capable of reducing the flotation distance of the magnetic head. On the surface of a base, aluminum containing nitrogen aggregates locally to form islands of metal deposits, which are distributed discretely over the entire surface of the base. Meanwhile, on the metal deposits, a metal base layer, a magnetic layer, a protective layer, and a lubrication layer are laminated sequentially to form a magnetic recording disk. On the disk surface, ultrafine irregularities are formed that reflect the shapes of the metal deposits, thereby realizing a reduction in the friction coefficient.

A magnetic recording disk has an improved surface film formed on the disk blank. A sputter-deposited surface coating containing nickel, chromium and oxygen (Ni--Cr--O) is formed on a AlMg disk blank, after which a cobalt alloy magnetic layer is formed over the Ni--Cr--O coating and a protective overcoat is formed over magnetic layer. The use of the Ni--Cr--O coating on the disk blank eliminates the need for a wet electroless deposition process for creation of a surface coating and results in an inherent texturing of the subsequently deposited magnetic film and protective overcoat which conform to the surface texture of the sputter-deposited Ni--Cr--O. The disks made with the Ni--Cr--O surface film exhibit a very low static friction force between the air-bearing slider and the disk surface when the disks are used in contact start/stop (CSS) disk files.

In a process for manufacturing a rigid magnetic recording disk, the disk's rigid substrate member is subjected to a force that produces plastic deformation in a manner so as not to remove material therefrom. In this way, the disk is provided with a surface topography that contains a controlled texture, for example in the area of the disk's start/stop track. In an embodiment of the invention, an ultrasonic probe and a disk shaped substrate member are placed in close proximity within a container that holds a fluid abrasive slurry, i.e. a suspension of hard particles in a liquid. Operation of the ultrasonic probe, as the substrate member rotates, causes the slurry to texture an adjacent portion of the substrate member by means of plastic deformation and in the absence of material removal from the substrate member. Operation of the probe thus provides texturing of the disk at an inner diameter track area thereof, for example in the disk's start/stop area. Since no material is removed from the substrate member, a step is not produced between the disk's start/stop area and the disk's outer data area. Alternate means for agitating the slurry, such as a hollow tip ultrasonic probe, a jet of slurry, and a jet of another fluid, such as an inert gas, are described.
