Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for requesting a UE to forgo handover to a congested neighbor. In particular, a wireless communication system may serve the UE over an air interface connection between the UE and the first base station. While serving the UE, the wireless communication system may receive from the UE a handover request requesting a handover of the UE from the first base station to a second base station. In response to receiving from the UE the handover request, the wireless communication system may determine that the second base station is threshold congested, and, responsive to the determining, (i) deny the handover request and (ii) send to the UE a command for the UE to withhold transmission of further requests for handover of the UE from the first base station to the second base station.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and corresponding system for controlling how a user equipment device (UE) served by a base station of a first network is concurrently served by a second network, where the first network is interconnected with the second network. In an example method, if the UE determines that the UE provides connectivity between at least one other device and the base station, the UE then causes itself to be served by the second network in a first mode in which the UE is registered with the second network via the first network. Whereas, if the UE determines that the UE does not provide such connectivity, the UE then instead causes itself to be served by the second network in a second mode in which the UE is registered with the second network directly via the second network rather than via the first network.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and a corresponding system for managing quantity of carriers, based at least in part on consideration of a public land mobile network (PLMN) to which the user equipment device (UE) at issue subscribes. A base station serving the UE may determine the PLMN to which the UE subscribes and, based at least on the UE's PLMN, may determine a quantity of carriers on which to serve the UE, the determined quantity of carriers being at least one carrier. The base station may then configure an air interface between the base station and the UE to encompass the determined quantity of carriers, so that the base station is then set to serve the UE on the determined quantity of carriers.

Abstract: A method and corresponding system for causing a de-authorized or decommissioned wireless communication device (WCD) to refrain from initiating communications with one or more services and/or servers in a wireless communication system. The WCD may be configured for communicating with a wireless communication system via (i) air interface access with a radio access network (RAN) having a dedicated backhaul connection to the wireless communication system, and (ii) a wireless access device providing a communication link to at least one intermediate network in a communication path to the wireless communication system. In response to the WCD detecting a threshold number of consecutive failed attempts to gain air interface access via the RAN, the WCD would disable at least one computer application from attempting to initiate communications with the wireless communication system via the wireless access device.

Abstract: In an example method, a base station encounters a trigger to begin providing carrier aggregation service to a UE. The base station is serving the UE on a first carrier, and makes a determination that the first carrier is a carrier having an uplink transmission power restriction rather than a carrier that does not have the uplink transmission power restriction. Responsive to encountering the trigger: based at least on the determination, the base station initiates a handover of the UE from the first carrier to a second carrier that does not have the uplink transmission power restriction; and the base station providing the UE with the carrier aggregation service, using the second carrier as a primary carrier during the carrier aggregation service.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for balancing control channel resource allocations between base stations. As disclosed, a first base station provides a first downlink control channel including a first set of air interface resources and a second base station provides a second downlink control channel including a second set of air interface resources, the first set of air interface resources and the second set of air interface resources being mutually exclusive. Upon detecting a threshold difference between (i) an extent of a capacity of the first downlink control channel being unused and (ii) an extent of a capacity of the second downlink control channel being unused, the system may change allocation resources between downlink control channels such that (i) capacity of one of the first and second downlink control channels is increased and (ii) capacity of the other one of the first and second downlink control channels is decreased.

Abstract: A method is disclosed to help register a UE with a different network in the event of an unsuccessful registration with a fallback network. In accordance with the disclosure, a UE may be registered on a first network and may then seek to register with a second network via the first network. The first network may attempt to register the UE with the second network, but the attempt to register the UE with the second network may ultimately fail. In response to such failure, the first network may discontinue providing service to the UE. Discontinuing the providing of service to the UE on the first network may result in the UE seeking to register directly with the second network or with a different network. By registering directly with the second network, or a different network, the UE may be able to initiate and/or receive voice calls via that network.

Abstract: To help manage resources in a cellular wireless communication system, a base station may track air interface resource allocation for each UE the base station is serving with a call and may identify one or more of the UEs or calls as candidates for handover from the base station on grounds that air interface resource allocation to each of the identified one or more UEs is high. Upon receipt of a request from a UE to initiate a new call, the base station may then predict based at least on that UE's channel quality what the air interface resource allocation rate will be for the requested call. And if the predicted rate for the given UE is threshold low, the base station may select one of the candidate UEs and force a handover of the selected UE's call from the base station.

Abstract: Aspects of selecting a base station or coverage area for a UE device are described. The UE device or a wireless network component (e.g., a base station) can determine RF uplink use values of a coverage area sector or cell. The RF uplink use values can be received from one or more base stations and can be based on a subframe or other time segment. The UE device can determine an average and variation of the RF uplink use values, and a load metric. The load metric can indicate a load pattern of an RF uplink. A selection of the base station or coverage area can be based on the load metric and whether the UE device is located or operating at an edge of a cell or coverage area. The UE device, while idle, can continue or switch to camping on the selected base station or coverage area.
