A method of controlling the air-fuel ratio of a mixture being supplied to an internal combustion engine, in a feedback manner responsive to output from an O.sub.2 sensor arranged in the engine exhaust system for sensing the concentration of a component in exhaust gases from the engine to produce as the output a normally fluctuating output signal indicative of the concentration. The air-fuel ratio is controlled to a desired value by means of at least one of proportional control applying a first correction value to correct the air-fuel ratio when the output signal changes from a rich side to a lean side or vice versa with respect to a predetermined reference value, and integral control applying a second correction value to correct the air-fuel ratio whenever a predetermined period of time elapses so long as the output signal remains on the lean side or on the rich side with respect to the predetermined reference value. At least one of the first and second correction values is set to a smaller first value as load on the engine is higher, and the set at least one correction value is applied to correction of the air-fuel ratio in a direction of enriching the mixture.

A memory has stored therein a plurality of basic values of a control amount by which the operation of the engine is to be controlled, and which conform to at least one operating parameter of the engine, as well as at least one correction value for correcting the basic values. When each of first and second conditions is detected under which the operation of the engine is required to be controlled by respective different amounts, ones of the basic values are read from the memory, which corresponds to the value of the at least one operating parameter. When a predetermined one of the first and second conditions is detected, the at least one correction value is read from the memory, by which the read basic values are corrected by the read correction value. The operation of the engine is controlled by control amounts based upon the corrected basic values. The operation of the engine includes control of fuel supply to the engine and exhaust gas recirculation control.

An evaporative fuel-processing system for an internal combustion engine includes a canister for adsorbing evaporative fuel generated in the fuel tank, a charging passage connecting between the canister and the fuel tank, a purging passage connecting between the canister and the intake system of the engine, an open-to-atmosphere passage for communicating the canister with atmosphere, a charge control valve for selectively opening and closing the charging passage, a purge control valve for selectively opening and closing the purging passage, and a vent shut valve for selectively opening and closing the open-to-atmosphere valve, and a pressure sensor inserted in the charging passage at a location on one side of the charge control valve closer to the fuel tank, for detecting internal pressure within the charging passage. When predetermined conditions are satisfied, the purge control valve is closed and the charge control valve and the vent shut valve are opened. It is determined that the vent shut valve is abnormal when the internal pressure detected by the pressure sensor is below a predetermined negative pressure value while the purge control valve, the charge control valve, and the vent shut valve are in the above respective states.

An ignition timing control system of the vehicle internal combustion engines which conducts ignition timing control retard adjustment during vehicle acceleration so as to eliminate vibration of the vehicle body caused by the sudden change in the engine output. When the vehicle acceleration is detected, the ignition timing is immediately retarded for a period and after the expiration of the period, the retard adjustment is continued so long as the engine speed increases and discontinued when the engine speed turns to decreases. As a result of the repeated ignition timing control, the overall ignition timing characteristics take on a zigzag pattern. The ignition timing is thus controlled to reduce the output torque when the torque tends to rise because the engine speed is rising, while the retard correction is discontinued so as to prevent a decrease in output torque when the engine output torque tends to decline. As such, by deliberately imparting a phase difference to the output, the change in the engine speed is averaged to result smooth rising during acceleration without causing the vibration to the vehicle body.

The retard limit for ignition timing is determined with respect to engine speed. A ratio of dwell angle on an ignition coil to a prescribed angle is calculated and compared with reference value. When the ratio is found to exceed the reference value, the retard limit is changed in advance direction so that ignition timing is caused to be advanced. Misfirings are thus avoided.

The reference value is set to a higher value as the detected value of atmospheric pressure is lower. The reference value is set to a lower value when the engine is operating in an idling region than when the engine is operating in a region other than the idling region.
