Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing the necessary size of a buffer between two cascaded decoding stages is described. The present invention includes a method and apparatus for encoding data into multiple blocks of data. The present invention also includes a method and apparatus for encoding the multiple blocks of data into multiple symbols. This encoding includes a method and apparatus for limiting the multiple symbols to a predetermined number of symbols. By limiting the symbols encoded, the buffer after the decoding stage is limited so that the size of the buffer memory to buffer decompressed data output from the decoding stage is reduced.
Abstract:
A three layer artificial neural network having an N terminal input, a two cell hidden and a single cell output layer generates an output parity signal indicating whether an even or an odd number of binary bits are asserted at the N terminal input. The two hidden layer neural cells have activation functions that cause deviations about a linear response characteristic that allow the classification of a signal representative of the number of asserted input bits into odd and even groups. This network represents a significant reduction in the number of hidden units previously required because of the particular form of activation transfer characteristic used in the two hidden layer neural cells.
Abstract:
Transforms such as the DCT are useful for image compression. One close relative of the DCT is preferred for its arithmetic simplicity. A method and apparatus is described whereby the image compression is done with no multiplications while still compatible with a JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) Transform. Other enhancements are made to improve image quality.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an encoding and decoding apparatus used for the compression and expansion of data. A state machine is provided having a plurality of states. Each state has at least one transition pair. Each element of the transition pair comprises zero or more bits representative of the compact code to be output and the identification of the next state to proceed to. The transition pair reflects an output for a yes and no response associated with the probability of the data to be compacted and whether the data falls within that probability.
Abstract:
A toner concentration monitor senses changes in the effective dielectric constant of a developer mixture whose dielectric constant changes with variations in the toner concentration in the mixture. The monitor is the type having a capacitive probe immersible in developer mixture such that the capacitance value of said probe varies with the effective dielectric constant of the mixture. Means are provided for creating an electrical pulse train signal of predetermined frequency and variable pulse width. The pulse width is adjusted in response to the capacitance value of the probe. The pulses are created by a multivibrator circuit which is turned on by clock pulses and which has a time constant determined by the capacitance value of the probe. Each pulse has a first portion of fixed duration and a second portion of duration variable with the capacitance value of said probe. Means may be provided for attenuating the duration of said first portion relative to said second portion so as to increase the percent of the total pulse attributable to the second portion.
Abstract:
A cylindrical support and centering device for a sensitive viscometer comprises a hollow cylindrical support member open at opposite ends. The viscometer is supported on the upper end with its cylindrical pivot housing slip-fitted into the upper end in snug contact with an inner cylindrical surface of the support. The pivot housing either rests against an annular stop surface formed below the cylindrical surface or is supported by contact of the viscometer with the upper end. The lower end of the support is dimensioned to snugly engage the outer cylindrical surface of the stator so that the longitudinal axis of the stator is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the rotor for precise centering.
Abstract:
Hydroformylation reactions are carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising a solid polymer of a trivalent phosphorus-containing compound having associated therewith a metal of the group cobalt, rhodium, ruthenium, platinum and palladium. The polymer, which can be formed in part of a polyvinylaromatic compound, can be used to remove catalyst residues from hydroformylation reaction effluent streams. p-styryldiethylphosphine and polymers thereof are disclosed.
Abstract:
Traffic signal timing may be altered as a function of determining occluded signal viewing. More particularly, processing units may determine that a view of a traffic signal by a person is obstructed by a large vehicle located on a first ingress path to a roadway intersection with a second ingress path. The traffic signal controls the right of way of the first ingress path, and the person with the obstructed view is travelling along the first ingress path toward the intersection and is located behind the large vehicle relative to a view sightline of the person to the traffic signal. In response to the occluded view determination, a transition of the traffic signal may be delayed from a current visual display of a proceed signal to a subsequent visual display of a stop signal, until an end of a delay period.

Abstract:
A network configuration file is generated at a host computer and downloaded to a digital camera. This file contains instruction information for communicating with a selected destination via a communications interface. The digital camera includes a “send” button or LCD icon which allows the user to easily transmit one or more images via a wired or wireless communications interface to a desired destination, which among other possibilities may be an Internet Service Provider or a digital photofinishing center. When the user selects this option, the communications port settings, user account specifics, and destination connection commands are read from the network configuration file on the removable memory card. Examples of these settings include serial port baud rate, parity, and stop bits, as well as account name and password.
