A conventional sealant composition having as its essential rubber components (1) at least one high molecular weight, hydrogenated polybutadiene polymer, and (2) at least one low molecular weight liquid elastomer, i.e., polybutene, as tackifying polymer, compatible to a high degree with said hydrogenated polymer; the resultant sealant composition reflecting a co-continuous phase morphology wherein said hydrogenated polymer provides a crosslinked network in said compatible low molecular weight liquid elastomer.

Thermoplastic elastomer blends of alpha-olefin polymers and copolymers, such as polypropylene, polyethylene, etc., having a melting point of at least 90.degree. C. with hydrogenated butadiene medium and high vinyl polymers have good physical properties such as low brittle point, good impact resistance at low temperatures, minimum creep at high temperatures, and good elongation. The blends can be repeatedly processed and still maintain good physical properties. The amount of alpha-olefin polymer or copolymer in the blend may range from about 10 percent to about 60 percent with the amount of the hydrogenated polybutadiene correspondingly ranging from about 90 percent to about 40 percent based on the combined weight of the two components. The blends are mixed at temperatures at least as high as the melting point of the alpha-olefin polymer or copolymer. These blends have excellent ozone resistance and aging properties, as well as excellent paint adhesion.

A method of producing an engineered plastic selected from the group consisting of high impact polystyrene, styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer, methylmethacrylate-butadiene-styrene copolymer, transparent impact polystyrene, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer is provided. The method comprises the steps of: (a) adding a polymer containing at least one high vinyl segment having a 1,2-vinyl bond content of greater than 45% to a solvent comprising at least one vinyl monomer; (b) optionally adding at least one additional inert solvent; (c) optionally adding additives selected from the group consisting of extender oils, modifiers, and antioxidants; and (d) initiating polymerization of the at least one vinyl monomer by the use of an initiator and/or heat, wherein the presence of the at least one high vinyl segment in the polymer allows direction of the grafting site during preparation of the engineered plastic.
