摘要: Methods and devices for performing surgery in a patient are provided. A cannula provides a working channel for access to a location in the patient. A clamp assembly is removably engaged to the cannula. The clamp assembly allows use of an endoscopic viewing system or can be removed to allow use of a microscopic viewing system in order to view the surgical site in the patient through the working channel. The clamp assembly includes a viewing element mounting portion having a length along which an endoscopic viewing element can be selectively positioned.

摘要: This invention relates to methods and instruments for performing a surgical procedure in a disc space between adjacent vertebrae. The instruments include a distractor and a cutting instrument. In one embodiment the distractor includes a body portion and a pair of flanges extending along opposite sides of the body portion such that a slot is formed between the flanges and the body portion. The cutting instrument is positionable over the body portion and into the slots of the distractor so that the flanges are positioned between the cutting instrument and the adjacent tissue.

摘要: A minimaly invasive spacer for positioning between vertebral members. The spacer is adjustable between a first orientation having a reduced size to facilitate insertion between the vertebral members. A second orientation has an enlarged size for contacting the vertebral members. The spacer includes linkages that are attached to a pair of plates. A pull arm is operatively connected to the linkages for adjusting the spacer from the first orientation to the second orientation. A delivery device is attached to the spacer for insertion between the vertebral members. In one embodiment, the delivery device is detachable to be removed from the spacer once positioned between the vertebral members. Methods of using the spacer include positioning the spacer between the vertebral members while in the first orientation. The spacer is then enlarged to the second orientation, and the delivery device is removed with only the spacer remaining within the patient.

摘要: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for use within an image-guided surgical navigation system for the storage and measurement of trajectories for surgical instruments. An icon representing the real-time trajectory of a tracked instrument is overlaid on one or more pre-acquired images of the patient. At the surgeon's command, the navigation system can store multiple trajectories of the instrument and create a static icon representing each saved trajectory for display. The surgeon may also measure a planar angle between any two trajectories. The angle is computed in the plane of the image, and therefore will be computed separately for each image displayed. Furthermore, the surgeon has the option of computing and displaying the three-dimensional distance between two points defined by any two trajectories.

摘要: A suction regulator valve adapted to be installed between a suction pump or other vacuum source and a suction tube or catheter, the valve comprising a hollow valve body having an outer surface with a generally transverse or circumferential opening therethrough, and a valve member slidably mounted on the valve body for generally transverse or circumferential movement thereon. The valve member is movable between an open position wherein the opening is uncovered and a closed position wherein the valve member covers and closes the opening. The valve member is positioned for engagement by the thumb or other finger of a user to enable the movement of the valve member to cover or uncover all or a portion of the opening. The suction regulator valve may be a separate member, may have a handle portion or may be formed integrally with a suction wand or other suction device.

摘要: A guide is disclosed for use in performing spinal surgery to prepare across a spinal disc and adjacent vertebrae an implantation space. The guide is associated with a computer controlled surgical navigation system employing an energy-detecting array to track positions of the guide in three dimensional space relative to a known reference point. The guide comprises a body for providing protected access to prepare across the spinal disc and into the adjacent vertebrae the implantation space. The body has a passage adapted to receive a bone removal device for forming the implantation space through the body. At least one electrically energizable energy emitter array is attached to the body for use in identifying the location of the guide relative to the adjacent vertebrae. A system and method for using the guide in spinal surgery are also disclosed.

摘要: A barrier device for a pool to prevent debris on the pool water surface from entering the pool skimmer intake. The barrier device comprises a first or upper section of a size and shape to fit on or in the skimmer intake, and a second or lower hollow section connected to and in communication with the first section. The second section depends from the first section and has a lower end that is positioned to be disposed below the pool water surface when the first section is positioned in the skimmer intake. In this manner, pool water can circulate from the lower end of the second section, through the second and first sections and into the skimmer intake. Debris on the pool water surface is prevented from entering the skimmer intake by the outer wall of the first section or the second section, depending on the construction thereof. The outer wall of the first or second section may be provided with one or more screened holes positioned to be disposed below the pool water surface. A receptacle such as a screen or net may be removably mounted on the first or second section to receive debris on the pool water surface.

摘要: This invention relates to methods and instruments for performing a surgical procedure in a disc space between adjacent vertebrae. A cannula is inserted to create a working channel through the skin and tissue of a patient using a transforaminal approach to the disc space. A viewing element is used to visualize working end of the cannula and the disc space. A facetectomy is performed through the working channel to access the disc space. The disc space is prepared with various instruments, such as distractors, shims, chisels and distractor-cutters that extend through the working channel. At least implant is inserted into the disc space. The procedure allows bi-lateral support of the adjacent vertebrae with the at least one implant inserted via a unitary, minimally invasive approach to disc space.
