摘要: An electrocoating composition containing a polymer having pendant amine groups, an alpha-, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carbonyl cross-linking agent, and an ultraviolet photosensitizer can be electrodeposited onto a cathode substrate disposed within an aqueous electrocoating bath. The amine groups of the polymer are protonated to render the polymer water dispersible prior to electrodeposition and upon electrodeposition the amine groups become de-protonated. The cross-linking agent cross-links the polymer upon ultraviolet irradiation of the electrocoated cathode substrate to form a fully-cured electrodeposited coating on the cathode substrate.

摘要: The present invention resides in the discovery that ethylenically unsaturated organic compounds can be readily photopolymerized by adding to such compounds a catalytic formulation including certain FDA approved food color additives and an amount of an organic amine activator. Particularly improved results are obtained by employing as said food color additive the combination of FD&C red No. 3 dye, with either FD&C red No. 2 dye, FD&C red No. 40 dye, or with both FD&C red No. 2 and FD&C red No. 40 dyes.

摘要: Disclosed is a method for preparing adhesive polymers which commences with the formation of a poly-telechelic polymer of narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) by polymerizing one or more radically-polymerizable monomers in the presence of a transition metal, a ligand, and an initiator, under atom or group transfer radical polymerization conditions. In this polymerization step, OH groups are contained on one or more of said initiator, an initiating monomer, a polymerizable monomer, a terminating monomer, or combinations thereof. The poly-telechelic polymer, then, is chain extended with a polyisocyanate to form the adhesive polymer.

摘要: An intumescent coating system and method therefor is disclosed for thermally protecting a substrate having a surface exposed to fire conditions. The coating system of the present invention is provided as having a first component which forms a rigid carbonific char foam having toughness and rigidity, and a second component which forms an insulative carbonific char foam having a density about half the density of the rigid carbonific foam to give insulation properties. The two foam components may be separately provided in a laminate-type arrangement as, respectively, an inner coating layer coated and cured on the surface of the substrate to form an inner film layer, and an outer coating layer coated and cured on the inner film layer to form an outer film layer. Alternatively, the two foams may be provided as being formed from components blended to comprise a single coating layer which is coated and cured on the surface of the substrate to form a film layer. In providing two foam components, one protecting the substrate from breakthrough and direct exposure to the fire conditions, and the other insulating the substrate to protect it from conductive, radiant, and/or convective heating by the fire conditions, the present invention affords a capability to offer flame retardancy at film thicknesses of less than 1.27 mm (50 mils).

摘要: A distributed fiber-optic sensor is obtained by using cladding that produces a change in the intensity of scattered light in the cladding of an optical fiber in response to a change in the environment of the cladding. The change in clad scattered light is coupled into the core causing a change in the intensity of backscattered light in the core. A sensing means such as an optical time domain refractometer is used to determine the change in intensity of the core backscattered light at a specific location along the fiber. The change in intensity of the scattered light in the clad is caused by overall changes in the amount of light in the cladding and changes in the number, size or both of the refractive index inhomogeneities in the cladding. These inhomogeneities can be, but are not limited to, composition variations, density variations of the same composition, phase separations, voids, or particulate inclusions.
