Abstract:
The invention provides systems and methods for reducing adipose tissue in a homogenous manner by regulated delivery of energy to a treatment site, and more particularly, delivery of constant thermal energy which results in a reduction of adipose tissue with little or no damage to other adjacent tissue.
Abstract:
A surgical probe apparatus is disclosed including a handpiece which includes an optical system configured to deliver therapeutic light to provide treatment of an area of tissue; and at least one suction port configured to remove a byproduct of the treatment from the area of tissue in response to an applied vacuum.
Abstract:
Prostate treatment using fluid stream to resect prostate tissue, thereby relieving symptoms of conditions such as BPH, prostatitis, and prostatic carcinoma. A device having a fluid delivery element is positioned within a lumen of the urethra within the prostate. A fluid stream is directed outwardly from the fluid delivery element toward a wall of the urethral lumen. The fluid delivery element is moved to scan the fluid stream over the wall to remove a volume of tissue surrounding the lumen. The fluid may be combined with therapeutically active substances or with substances that increase resection efficiency. Fluid force may be adjusted to provide selective tissue resection such that soft tissue is removed while harder tissue is left undamaged. In order to gain a working space within the urethra, another fluid may be introduced to insufflate the urethra in the region of treatment.
Abstract:
A system for direct imaging and diagnosing of abnormal cells in a target tissue includes a disposable optical speculum and an image acquisition system having the speculum assembled on and mechanically secured thereto. The image acquisition system is arranged to capture at least one of a single image or multiple images or video of cells within the target tissue using at least one of bright field or dark field ring illumination divided into independently operated segments to obtain a plurality of data sets. An image analysis and control unit in communication with the image acquisition system analyzes the data sets and applies algorithms to the data sets for diagnosing abnormal cells.
Abstract:
Provided is a device that can be attached to an endoscopic device and when so attached is capable of protecting said endoscope from damage that may be caused by errant laser fire. Also provided is a device that can determine the potential for damage from errant laser fire to a connected endoscopic device and emit a warning of such potential damage and, if required, can place the laser in a standby mode to avoid damage from errant laser fire.
Abstract:
In general, in one aspect, the invention features systems, including a photonic crystal fiber including a core extending along a waveguide axis and a dielectric confinement region surrounding the core, the dielectric confinement region being configured to guide radiation along the waveguide axis from an input end to an output end of the photonic crystal fiber. The systems also includes a handpiece attached to the photonic crystal fiber, wherein the handpiece allows an operator to control the orientation of the output end to direct the radiation to a target location of a patient.
Abstract:
A laser energy delivery device including a laser source operatively connected to a handpiece by means of a swivel joint, the swivel joint including a first reflector mounted in a swivel arm, one portion of the swivel arm being rotatably attached to the laser source and having a window for laser energy to pass from the laser source to the first reflector, and another portion of the swivel arm being rotatably attached to the handpiece, wherein the laser energy is directed from the first reflector to the handpiece.
Abstract:
In general, in one aspect, the invention features methods that include directing radiation to a target location of a patient through a photonic crystal fiber, the photonic crystal fiber having a hollow core and flowing a fluid through the hollow core to the target location of the patient.
Abstract:
A laser treatment apparatus for performing treatment by irradiating a part to be treated by a laser beam for treatment is disclosed. This apparatus includes a laser source which emits the treatment laser beam; a multi-articulated arm for delivering the treatment laser beam emitted from the laser source, the arm including a plurality of light delivery pipes at least one of which is axially extensible, a joint part for jointing the light delivery pipes, the joint part being rotatable with respect to at least one of the pipes jointed by the joint part, a reflection mirror disposed in the joint part; and a hand-piece connected to an end of the arm and used for irradiating the treatment laser beam delivered therein through the arm to the treatment part.
