摘要: A support element is disposed between a housing and a fragile structure resiliently mounted within the housing. The support element includes an integral, substantially non-expanding ply or layer of melt-formed ceramic fibers containing at least alumina and silica. The fibers have an average diameter ranging from about 1 micron to about 14 microns and have been prepared by a process of heat treating under a time-temperature regimen of one of (i) heat treating said fibers at a temperature of 990° C. to at least 1050° C. for greater than 1 hour such that the treated fibers have about 5 to about 50 percent crystallinity as detected by x-ray diffraction, and a crystallite size of about 50 Å to about 500 Å, or (ii) heat treating said fibers at a temperature of greater than 1050° C. for an effective time such that the treated fibers have about 5 to about 50 percent crystallinity as detected by x-ray diffraction, and a crystallite size of about 50 Å to about 500 Å. The resultant support element provides a minimum residual pressure for holding the fragile structure within the housing of one of at least 4 psi after at least 200 cycles of testing at 900° C. or at least 10 psi after at least 1000 cycles of testing at 750° C. Such a support element may be used in devices for the treatment of exhaust gases such as catalytic converters, diesel particulate traps and the like. A method of mounting a fragile structure in such a device is also provided.

摘要: A biodegradable ceramic fiber composition for a high-temperature thermal insulator is provided. The composition includes: 58 to 67% by weight SiO2, 26 to 34% by weight CaO, 2 to 8% by weight MgO, 0 to 1% by weight Al2O3, 0 to 5% by weight B2O3, 0 to 3% by weight Na2O+K2O, and 1% by weight or less impurities selected from TiO2 and Fe2O3. The composition has a linear thermal contraction coefficient of 3% or less (when maintained at 1100° C. for 24 hours) and a dissolution rate constant of 700 ng/cm2·hr or more in a synthetic body fluid. When compared to known biodegradable ceramic fibers, the ceramic fiber composition also has a significantly improved solubility in a synthetic body fluid so that it can easily be dissolved and removed even when inhaled into the human lungs, thereby reducing harmfulness to the human body.

摘要: A mounting mat for an exhaust gas treatment device includes first and second major opposite facing surfaces, leading and trailing edges, and opposite lateral edges. At least a portion of one or both of the opposite lateral edges includes an edge protectant that protects the mounting mat against erosion from hot gases encountered during the normal operation of the exhaust gas treatment device. The edge protectant remains flexible after it has been applied to the mounting mat and substantially dried. Also disclosed is an exhaust gas treatment device that includes a housing and a fragile structure mounted within the housing by the mounting mat having the edge protectant deposited thereon. Additionally disclosed are methods of making the mounting mat and an exhaust gas treatment device.
