Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a fire retardant composite, a composite and its use. A method of manufacturing a fire retardant composite by applying an aqueous gel-forming composition, e.g. a fire retardant coating composition, on a substrate comprises an aluminosilicate, the aluminosilicate comprising alkali metal aluminate and an alkali metal silicate, and an organic liquid having a boiling point greater than 110° C., e.g. silicone oil. The molar ratio of SiO2:X2O for the alkali metal silicate is from 3.6:1 to 10:1, where X represents the alkali metal of the alkali metal silicate, when the alkali metal aluminate has a molar ratio of Y2O:AI2O3 of 1.35:1, where Y represents the alkali metal of the alkali metal aluminate, this providing improved water resistance for films or coatings prepared from the compositions by drying and curing.

The articles include micro diameter hollow fibers, tubes having hollow walls, solid and hollow sheets, and open cell foams. The articles are useful for filters, catalyst media, fuel cell electrodes, body implantation devices, structural materials, vibration and noise control, heat exchangers, heat sinks, heat pipes, heat shields and other applications.
Abstract:
A porous material comprising vapor grown carbon fiber in an amount of 10 to 90 mass %, fiber filaments of the carbon fiber forming a three-dimensional network and having a diameter of 1 to 1,000 nm, an aspect ratio of 5 to 15,000, a specific surface area (by BET method) of 2 to 2,000 m2/g, and the ratio of the intensity of the peak at 1,360 cm−1 in a Raman scattering spectrum of the carbon fiber to that of the peak at 1,580 cm−1 in the spectrum(I1360/I1580) is 0.1 to 2.0, wherein the porosity of the porous material (V/V0) is 0.50 to 0.99 and a specific surface area is 5 to 1,000 m2/g; and a production method and use thereof. The vapor grow carbon fiber impregnated in the porous material of the present invention does not contain aggregates and a three-dimensional network is formed between the fiber filaments, wherein length of each of the fiber filaments is maintained. Therefore, the vapor grown carbon fiber enables to readily produce a composite material (porous material), in which even a small amount of addition of vapor grown carbon fiber can exhibit sufficient effect.

Abstract:
The insulation barrier is formed of a body of expanded polystyrene which is impregnated with sodium silicate. In addition, a coating formed of a metallic-based inorganic material is applied over at least one surface of the body. The sodium silicate is applied in solution form and maintained within the body by a wetting agent in the solution. The coating is be applied by a coating roller either before or after drying of the impregnated polystyrene body.
