Disclosed is a process for cooling hot exhaust gases. The process gases are supplied to a stationary fluidized bed, which contains cooling elements and is contained in an annular trough. Fluidizing gas is supplied to the stationary fluidized bed through the permeable bottom of the trough. The hot process gas is passed through the central opening in the fluidized bed. Cooled solids flow from the fluidized bed across the inner rim of the trough into the process gas stream and are entrained by said stream into the dust-containing space over the top surface of the fluidized bed. The solids which are separated in the dust-containing space fall back into the annular fluidized bed, and the cooled gas which contains the remaining solids is supplied to a gas cooler, which is provided with cooling surfaces. The gas which leaves the upper portion of the gas cooler is fed to a solids separator and the separated solids are recycled to the stationary fluidized bed.

Waste products, particularly scrap metal, adulterated by organic components, is pyroprocessed by: (1) shredding the adulterated scrap metal into particles having a maximum size of 5 cm.; (2) in a pyrolysis stage operating at a temperature of approximately 550.degree. C. to 600.degree. C. converting the particles into solids and pyrolysis gas; (3) in a mechanical processing stage separating the solids into unadulterated metal and pyrolysis coke; and (4) in a high-temperature gasification stage into which an oxidizing agent and, optionally, metallurgical coke is introduced converting the pyrolysis coke together with pyrolysis gas stemming from the pyrolysis stage into a heating gas free of organic substances.

A process for the partial combustion of finely divided coal at high temperature and pressures to make synthesis gas having entrained particles of fly ash which are separated from the gas at high pressure. The fly ash and a minor amount of entrained gas are handled in a batchwise manner to isolate a batch in a lock hopper, depressurize the batch, strip the synthesis gas from the fly ash and cool the fly ash prior to disposal. During the depressurizing steps, the kinetic energy represented by fluids flowing from the pressurized lock hopper is utilized to provide power to a pressure recovery means and do additional work. The additional work is used to aid in the pressurization of a second lock hopper. In an alternate embodiment the additional work may be used to aid in fluidizing the particulate coal flow to the burners of the gasifier.

A method for gasifying or combusting solid, carbonaceous material in a circulating fluidized bed reactor. Particles are separated from the product gas at least in two stages so that in the first stage, mainly coarser, so-called circulating particles are separted and returned to the reactor. In the second stage, fine carbonaceous particlates are separated from the gas and are made to agglomerate at a raised temperature. Coarser particles thus recieved are returned to the reactor through a return duct together with circulating particles. Adhesion of agglomerating particles to the walls of the duct is prevented preferably by leading hot particulates to the center of the duct and circulating particles to the walls of the duct.

Organic refuse is pyrolyzed to form disposable solids and gas. The gas is washed at a temperature well above 100.degree. C. with wash oil, which is recirculated. Spent wash oil is pyrolyzed with contaminants and further organic refuse. The washed gas is filtered through sorption means to remove acid and or other noxious gases therefrom before being cooled well below 100.degree. C. to condense water vapor and other constituents having boiling points within the range of from, e.g., 75.degree. to 150.degree. C. After separating the resulting condensate, thus-purified combustion gas is used, e.g., as a fuel source for the organic-refuse pyrolysis.
